I came back from work on Monday evening and found Harper and Noel staring at my television.
“Wait, I thought you two were attached to my soul or whatever.”
The two sisters turn to face me. Noel speaks in her usual cold tone.
“We are bound to your soul, but we are not bound to your physical body.”
“Then why were you so eager to follow me to school this morning?” I say with a hint of annoyance in my voice.
“Cut me some slack, Ken. I just wanted to mingle with the youth of today. Or I would if you weren’t born a jerk ass,” Harper said, returning to the game she was playing.
“Wait a minute!” I stop in my tracks. “Why are you playing video games, isn’t that beneath you two?”
“Why would you think that? Is it because we were rich when we were alive?” Harper asked, glaring at me.
I avoid eye contact.
“I mean, yeah.”
“You couldn't be any more wrong,” Noel begins. “Our status has nothing to do with our interest, thank you very much.”
“In that case, then I apologize.”
“Good.” Noel says and turns her attention back to the game her sister was playing.
I change out of my work uniform into my house clothes and join the Frost sister on the couch. They are playing the new Jump-Man game which I had already beaten.
“What did a couple of rich girls do for fun one hundred years ago?” I ask as Harper missed her jump timing and fell down a chasm.
“We ride our horses. Went to plays, musicals, and operas, though I hated them.” Harper saus, starting the level over.
“Often Harper and I will go to our vacation home out on the lake and swim all day.” Noel says as her eyes glisten.
“Blegh, it all sucked compared to modern day! No internet, no video games, and the movies sucked too.”
“I am in agreement with you dear sister,” Noel concurs.
I am not the type of person who just watches other people play video games. I rather play them myself. So video game streamers and Virtual A.I. streamers do not really appeal to me. That’s not to say I hate them, in fact I respect them. Editing videos and talking to chat for hours can be exhausting, I would imagine. Also, I am a huge fan of the cute girls, both real and 2D. I am just not the type of guy who would send them any of my hard earned cash no matter how much work they put into editing.
If you are talking about streaming itself, then all they do is talk to a chatroom while playing video games. I would rather support more creative minds like artists and musicians.
I walk over to the shelf with my video games, glancing over all of the titles that I own. Fighting games are out of the picture. I am by no means an expert on fighting games, but I think I am decent. Decent enough that if I play either Harper or Noel, I will crush them.
Instead, I pull out a racing game that is easy to play, not to mention fun.
“How about we have a change of pace?” I suggest, holding out the game in front of the sisters.
“What is that?” They say in unison?
“It’s called Party Kart. It’s a racing game that we all can play. You girls want to try it out?”
Harper shrugs. “Sure. I was getting tired of this game anyways. It is way too hard!”
“She’s been stuck on the same level for thirty minutes,” Says Noel, a teasing smile across her face.
“Puh-lease! You couldn’t even make it past the first level without wasting all of your lives!” Harper says, rolling her eyes.
I put the cartridge in the console and it loads instantly. One of the great quality of life improvements modern consoles have over past consoles. The load times used to take forever and if you had shitty internet it made it worse. But I do want to own some classic consoles one day, maybe if I get a better paying job, then collecting them would be feasible.
We played for hours. I’ve won more games than I lost, but I let the sisters (mainly Harper) win some races.
