She discovered that it was all an illusion when after trying to burn the "monster", which turned out to be a huge dragon, she missed the shot and a rock fell on her. When she awoke, Tam found that there was no longer any dragon, but only a small, harmless creature. The creature was surprised that Tam was no longer under the control of his illusion and panicked. Believing that all was lost, the creature told her that he only wanted to feel important because among its own kind he was constantly ignored. The creature begged Tam to keep his secret and let her run away. She was confused and demanded that the creature set the record straight, but just at that moment her companions arrived and the creature hypnotised everyone into believing that Tam had eliminated what everyone thought was a dragon.
Tam was decorated and celebrated as the saviour of the village. She was about to receive land and prizes but, to the surprise of the nobles, she turned it all down. Unable to tell the truth because the little creature was no longer there to explain things, she decided not to receive prizes she felt she did not deserve. This, however, had the opposite effect and everyone believed that her refusal to receive gifts was due to her great heart and loyalty, earning her even more favour with the people.
The "hero" by chance Tam Salkay has now been sent by her people to solve a great mystery. The nobles believe that sending their "champion" to other lands will help improve the reputation of their people. Enthusiastically, the citizens of the village regularly send her letters asking about her adventures. The nobles often ask her if perhaps she needs some kind of monetary support or letter of introduction, constantly adding to Tam's sense of guilt.
Despite carrying a "fictitious" responsibility, the unconditional support of the townsfolk made her decide that she would do her best to become the hero they need. She would also keep an eye out for that little creature. Maybe at some point people would realise that she wasn't really a dragon slayer and she would need help to give some explanations...
