Life is filled with disappointment and betrayal. Stefan joining the team, no matter how insignificant it might’ve been, felt like the biggest kick in the face. Am I being overdramatic? Perhaps but that doesn’t mean he can just squeeze in here as if nothing happened.
The car ride felt tenser than it had before. Keira kept trying and failing to strike up a conversation with Stefa. You’d think it would've made her shut up, but no she just kept talking. Clarisse, despite her obvious discomfort, tried to put forth an effort to get to know him. For once Lucas and I were on the same page, neither of us wanted anything to do with him.
“Did Lucas already explain the plan to you?” Clarisse said as she turned to face him.
“Yes,” he responded simply.
“Perfect! That mean’s everything should go smoothly-.”
“-shoot!” Lucas cut her off.
The car stopped abruptly. If it wasn’t for the seatbelt I definitely would’ve had my head through the windshield. I looked outside but didn’t see anything.
“What happened?” I asked.
With no warning, Stefan jumped out of the car. That’s when I finally noticed. There was a wolf slightly off in the distance. It looked bigger than anything I had ever seen. It was standing on all fours like normal but it was at least three times bigger than normal.
We were expecting to see them when we got closer to the village. The fact that it was that far out was more concerning than if it had just been contained in one area. This mission wasn’t going to be as easy as I thought.
Stefan picked up a rock off the ground and it tossed in the air a couple times. He walked slowly towards it, trying to not draw attention to himself. It worked for a couple seconds before it ultimately saw him.
It charged towards him. Its teeth were bared, and blood was pouring out the side of its mouth. The hairs on its back were standing up in anticipation of killing its prey. The ground was torn up and its claws ripped into it.
“Shouldn’t we help him?” I commented.
“No. He’s got this,” Keira smiled.
For the first time since he joined us, he looked at peace. He wasn’t scratching at his arm and his face looked calm. It was weird how suddenly competent he looked.
The wolf was around thirty feet away from him before he threw a rock at it. The rock was enveloped in a red glow that almost looked like fire. Upon impact, the rock exploded and sent the wolf flying back.
It landed against a tree, solidly knocking it out. Stefan took a deep breath and headed back to the car. He sat back in his seat and acted as if nothing happened.
“You did amazing!” Keira beamed. “I knew you could handle it.”
“Thanks,” he muttered briefly while scratching at his arm again.
I rolled my eyes, “Shouldn’t we do something about the wolf?”
“Someone from the Agency is going to come and get it,” Lucas remarked.
I had to admit I was slightly impressed. This meant that he wasn’t going to be a weak link. His ability annoyed me to no end though. I felt like some sick joke. Someone with the ability to make explosions was the reason that Carter was incapacitated. Now, we had someone with almost the same ability join our team. I swear the Agency was playing some sick joke on us.
We reached the motel around an hour later. It was pretty unspectacular. It was also going to be our new home for a while. Not to mention I would have the luxury of sharing a room with Clarisse and Keira. Clarisse is fine, Keira would be fine if she just kept her mouth shut.
Ever since she saved my life I thought things would change between us. I should’ve known that she’d still be pretty annoying. I will forever be in her debt but I will also be forever annoyed with her.
“Alright ladies sorry to break it to you but you’re going to have to share the bed,” Keira plopped on the bed.
“The last thing I wanted was to share a bed with you anyways,” I laughed.
“That’s too bad. I’m a pretty good cuddler,” she winked at me. It made me want to vomit.
“Clarisse, never leave me,” I grabbed her shoulders.
She smiled, “Never.”
We started unpacking some of our things. Not that I really wanted to. I just wanted a hot meal and a nap but unfortunately, it was noon and we had things to do.
I grabbed a coat out of my bag, “I can’t believe Carter was replaced that easily.”
“I wouldn’t go as far as to say replaced. Besides we need five members and Stefan is good at the job,” Keira shrugged her shoulders.
“Still it just feels wrong. I can’t believe that you’re just ok with it.”
“We have a job to do. We can’t dwell on things forever,” Keira commented.
“Good to know that you officially don’t have a heart,” I crossed my arms.
She sighed, “Can you just stop. You’re acting ridiculous.”
“That’s rich coming from you. The queen of acting is ridiculous.”
Clarisse cleared her throat and stepped in between us. “We don’t have to argue. These things just happen.”
I scoffed, “So now you’re on her side?”
Her eyes teared up, “I’m on no one’s side. I just think we should give Stefan a chance.”
I turned away from them. “Give him a chance? He has the same ability as the person that put Carter in a coma!”
“So now you’re going to attack Clarisse? Your people skills need some help,” Keira yelled.
I turned back to look at them. Clarisse had a serious look on her face. Tears streamed down her face. I felt like an idiot. I never meant to make her cry.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t’ve said those things to you,” I said softly.
She wiped her tears and took a deep breath,” It’s ok I forgive you.”
She wrapped her arms around me. I smiled and wrapped my arms back around her. I could see Keira smiling at me from behind Clarisse.
“I’ll try and give Stefan a chance but I’m not promising anything,” I smirked.
She let go of me, “That’s all I ask for.”
A knock at the door interrupted the moment. Keira headed over. Her pant leg lifted up slightly and I could see bandages wrapped around her ankle. Lucas was at the door.
“What do you need? Can’t you see we’re busy,” Keira joked.
“You have no life, I know you’re not busy,” Lucas remarked.
Keira crossed her arms, “Excuse me. I resent that statement.”
Lucas rolled his eyes, “We’re holding a meeting in my room. Come over at your most convenient opportunity.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say.”
Lucas stayed in the doorway for a second. His face looked worried. “Were you crying?” He asked softly to Clarisse.
She walked towards him. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder. Don’t worry, I'm ok now.”
“Are you sure?” he said as they walked out the door.
I sat on the bed, suddenly feeling more exhausted than I was before. Keira sat down next to me.
“For the record, I’m sorry about what I said.”
“I know,” I responded back. I’m sorry too.”
She leaned on my shoulder, “Thank you.”
