Kin was supposed to talk, but he had been just sitting there and staring at some point and didn't say anything. Yuume decided to say something then.
"Every Midtimes look like this?" he asked.
Kin looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"I just wonder, if everywhere is just an endless abyss" explained Yuume.
"No" denied Kin. "My best friend has a clearing with flowers and cloudy sky in his mind. If you would surprise him, it would be also raining. His brother has a professional office. My older brother has a cozy room with a sea view and a well-stocked bar, because he likes the taste of alcohol, but he has a weak head, so he only drinks in his mind. My younger brother has a hall filled with colorful cushions that you can jump on or just lie down and fall asleep. But I don't know why I should decorate it. It's just a waste of energy."
"At least you could make some grass and some sky" said Yuume. "Such darkness is overwhelming."
"The world is overwhelming" replied Kin.
Yuume laughed.
"And why are you laughing, huh?" Kin blinked.
"Because you're quite cute with all your negativity about everything" replied Yuume.
"I'm not cute!" Kin felt offended.
His golden eyes looked straight in Yuume's amber eyes, which still were beaming.
"Yeah, of course" Yuume poked Kin's nose. "You just act a little like a child."
"I'm twenty two" Kin snorted. "In your timeline twenty seven. Get away this finger from my face or I will bite it off!"
"I have two friends about your age" announced Yuume. "They're also so impetuous."
"I'm not impetuous!"
"Right, you just keep screaming" Yuume smiled slightly.
Kin looked at him and sighed.
"Have you tried to do something with this small talk?"
"I just wanted make you talk" replied Yuume.
Kin laid down and looked into the void.
"If someone had an accident, we can prevent it" he said quietly. "We just have to take keys from them or stop the car, which almost hit them. Catch them, when they're falling. Stop the beam falling at him. It's easy."
Kin bent his legs and sighed.
"It's a bit more difficult with infectious diseases and pregnancies" he continued. "We need to find out, where someone got infected. Sometimes we fly to another country. We need to know exactly, when a woman got pregnant, when she miscarried, when she went into labor. If she died in childbirth, we need to know the cause. If the baby died in childbirth, too. We need to get the doctors to make them do the caesarean. It's hard, because they often don't want to listen to us. That's why we usually go a few days before. If they don't listen, we're looking for a hospital, where they'll listen. We visit our client, who doesn't know that he's one at all. We tell him that he has to go to this and that hospital and see this and that doctor. The woman was saved, the child survived."
Kin stopped talking for a moment.
"But sometimes we don't know, what went wrong. Or a woman who bled out during childbirth, still bleeds out during a C-section. Children don't die because of a doctor's mistake. The women were careful and didn't do anything risky, but they still wake up in bloody sheets. And diseases? Infectious ones require a lot of effort, but they can be prevented. How can we know, why a one-and-a-half-year-old child has brain cancer? How are we supposed to save a young man, who has a heart defect since birth? We're looking for ways to fix it, but nothing comes to mind. And customers complain that we deny their requests out of the blue. But saying >>no<< is still easier than watching all your efforts go to waste. At least in theory."
"Do they have a complaint?" asked Yuume. "Those, who's requests you denied."
"Yes. They yell at us. They lie. But I understand them" Kin closed his eyes. "If my only option was to ask someone with magical powers for help and they turned me down, I would be furious too. Especially when it comes to my family."
"It's a bit like putting animals to sleep" said Yuume. "You know there's nothing more you can do, because the dog can't breathe on its own anymore and the cat's organs have failed, but you still feel angry. Because you would like to help, but everything has failed."
"Exactly" nodded Kin. "You know what? Maybe you're not stupid after all."
"Are you feeling better?" asked Yuume.
"A little" yubiwa's golden eyes were still fixed on the vault of emptiness. "And now you should let me go back to sleep. I think the Midtimes have drained all my energy."
"Of course" Yuume looked at the yubiwa and smiled. "If you ever want to talk again..."
"Yes, yes" Kin waved his hand. "I know."
Yuume was just sitting there and wondered if he could disconnect himself, but despite trying to do anything, he had no idea how.
"Tansetsuki?"
Yuume looked at him. Kin sat up and looked at his hands.
"Thank you" he said quietly.
His voice sounded like he didn't thank anyone for a long time.
