The situation in Mito was getting worse. Conquerors couldn't deal with vampires without conscience anymore. Previously, they could go on missions even alone, now at least four or five people fought with one or two Night's Children. Mito citizens started to find out about the bloodsuckers and fled the city, not knowing that vampires are scattered all over the world and here is only one of their larger habitats. Night's children from the "Yoru" club had to help people with white and green auras, because they couldn't help themselves. The only hope for peace was a certain vampire and conqueror duo - Akiya and Masashi had killed more evil vampires than all the others put together.
"Masashi, Saito wants you to go to >>Anemone<< district, there is a gang of vampires, who attacks people" announced Jyomi and gave him some papers.
"Do they want to send me here alone?" asked Masashi, a little confused.
Districts' names had been given by Saito and Mitsuru, when they opened this Shelter for conquerors. In "Aoi" and "Sakura" there were always some unhinged, overly stupid and cheerful vampires, who probably didn't even know that they lost their conscience. They were more like smiling, murderous ghouls than vampires. But they were very easy to defeat, since they even rarely tried to run away. In "Aoi" there was often just one "smiley", as conquerors called them. In "Sakura" there were more.
Vampires in "Ayame" didn't lose points of IQ with their conscience. And about "Anemone"... Well, it was the one district, where conquerors often lost their lives. Just like Sakamo.
"Saito and Mitsuru said that they're going with you" replied Jyomi.
"Maybe we should take someone else with us?"
"Everyone is busy" Jyomi sighed. "I'm going with Kousuke, Mida and Hashi on a mission too. But you can take Kawakami with you, right?"
"Yeah, right" Masashi nodded.
He knew that Akiya is getting bored with these "defeat all red vampires" commissions...
* * *
Akiya was sitting on the windowsill and observing the sleeping world. He was thinking about its problems, tapping fingers on a cup of water. When he was still alive, he used to sit like this with tea. Now human food and drink made him sick. Like all vampires.
Then the door opened and Masashi burst into the room. Akiya turned his head and looked at him curiously. In fact, he was a bit amused that conqueror feels so comfortable in "Yoru".
"So, where we should go today?" asked Akiya after a while.
"To >>Anemone<<" replied Masashi. "There is some gang of bad red vampires, you know. As always."
"Just us?" asked Akiya.
"Everyone else is on another mission" Masashi shrugged. "But Saito and Mitsuru are going with us."
"Are they really Black Clouds or they're just pretend to be so high in ranking just because they're your leaders?"
"They're gonna kill me for this, but I have to admit that they're not" replied Masashi, a little embarrassed.
"Okay, let's go" said Saito, appearing in the treshold.
"We have to defeat bad vampires!" exclaimed Mitsuru, a little too excited.
"Are you really so happy, even if you can die during this mission?" Akiya looked at them, a little confused.
He drank his water and put a cup on the table, then he jumped off the windowsill.
"It's a little childish, you know?"
Saito looked at Mitsuru with consternation.
"He's right" he said after a while.
"Well, I think so..." Mitsuru thought for a moment, then he waved his hand. "Oh, nevermind. We should go."
When they got there, they couldn't smell anything. However, when they stood in front of a certain building, Masashi felt the cold coming from above. So the vampires must have been on the roof of the building.
The conquerors took the lift, Akiya climbed the wall. They looked around. Nobody was there.
"Look, who the cat dragged in. Our Mooney has friends" they heard a female voice.
Everyone turned around sharply. They saw Megumi. She smiled maliciously, snapped her fingers and then four other vampires appeared on the roof.
"Attack!" ordered Saito.
Akiya froze out of fear. Those other vampires were Moto, Shima and Suzu - Megumi's kids and Hideki - her husband, whom she turned into vampire during the honeymoon. All five, including Megumi, were characterized by unprecedented speed and strength that no one could match. Even though Akiya tried to kill anyone, he couldn't. They were too fast. Too strong. At one point, he noticed that Mitsuru and Saito, taking advantage of the momentary inattention of the evil vampires, escaped, leaving him and Masashi alone with the bloodthirsty and conscienceless Night's Children.
"And what, Ueno? Do you really think that you can defeat me?" asked Megumi, snatching the gun from him and breaking it in half.
She grabbed Masashi by his shirt and threw him against the wall. Masashi felt unable to move. He knew that he's going to end up just like the rest of the best conquerors. That he's going to be killed by Megumi.
"Masashi!" Akiya called him, trying to free himself from Moto, Shima and Suzu's arms.
Hideki ran after Mitsuru and Saito.
"You can't help him anymore" said Suzu. "My Lady is about to end his miserable life."
"Let me go! Let me go! I have to help him! Leave him, Megumi! Stop!" Akiya shouted, but no one listened to him.
Megumi walked to Masashi and looked at him, smirking.
"Farewell, Ueno Masashi" she said and plunged the dagger into his heart.
Masashi whispered something under his breath and closed his brown eyes.
