In Jewish belief, the end of the world involves the resurrection of all dead people. If Jews are buried outside of the Land of Israel, their bones will need to roll through tunnels until they arrive to reassemble themselves. Somewhat related to this, cremation and dismemberment of a corpse are not generally practiced as part of Jewish burial. Joe had explained this to Gideon through a comparison to the Ancient Egyptian belief that the earthly body should be preserved in order for the deceased person to have a functional body in the afterlife.
While stationed on an island off the coast of China, a band of sea-faring thieves discover the body of their best navigator, Joseph Cinnabar. They grieve over their dear friend, immediately lay claim to his possessions, and make a disorderly effort to carry out his final wishes.
