I was on my way to my monthly watermelon checkup with Alex. I needed to think about everything and make a decision, but for now my priority was to find out how my baby was doing.
"Lay," Alex moved my leg to get my attention. "What's on your mind?" He glanced at me out of the corner of his eye as he pulled into the hospital parking lot.
"Nothing, I'm just nervous to see Watermelon. I haven't seen it in a while." He parks in a secluded spot and then helps me out of the car.
"I'm sure everything is fine with the peanuts, not so peanuts." he laughs slightly at her wit and we enter the clinic.
Once the appointment is confirmed, we immediately go to the doctor's office. He had asked my old doctor to pass all my information on to this hospital so that he could take care of me here since he had made the decision to stay alone until the watermelon was born and he hoped not to postpone my departure from the country.
"Good afternoon, Layla Williams, right?" I nod when I walk into the office.
"Yes, and this is my brother." Alex, they shake hands.
"Nice to meet you," he speaks.
"Have a seat." We nod and sit next to each other. "Well, Layla, let's start with the routine questions." I nod.
[...]
"And there it is." He points to a specific spot on the screen. I decided this time to see the baby in 3D as I was excited to see her little face. My eyes filled with tears when I saw her face, her hands were close to her chubby cheeks "It is a baby that for its weeks of gestation is very well formed. You seem to be eating well," the doctor murmured with a smile.
"Yes, I am a witness and participant in the sleepless mornings to prepare food for the gentlemen here," Alex says and laughs as he takes her hand.
"Well, I don't see anything out of the ordinary," he grinned. "I'm glad to hear that. I'll take pictures of this so you can keep them." I nod and look at Alex. "By the way, do you know what it is?" I nod.
"Yeah, but not me," Alex says.
"It's a boy," the doctor and I say in unison, we both laugh.
"He's going to be a sexy little Williams like his uncle." I laugh and give him a little shake as best I can.
"Honey, you can get out the liquid." I nod and get up from the table taking the blue liquid from my belly "You have to take all your vitamins, normal as you did before and I recommend that you do not take too much of the craving." I nod "The baby is perfect but you should not take too much of the flavor that we want the little one to continue as healthy." I nod again.
I get up from the gurney and say goodbye to the doctor and Alex.
"Why didn't you tell me we were going to have a baby?" Alex asks.
"Most everyone knows, only Stace ..." I get in the car and he cuts me off.
"I can't believe she knew her uncle before me, the guy who feeds you every night." he started the car and we set off.
"For God's sake," he laughed slightly, "You must drop me off at the Spa, Stace is waiting for me, we're getting ready for the company benefit dance."
"I don't have a date yet and I promised Dad I'd bring one."
"Don't even think about taking one of your empty heads."
"If I can't find one in time, what do you want me to do?"
"I warned you Williams." After a few minutes Alex parked at the Spa and outside was Stace staring at her phone a little indignant. I get out of the car and touch her shoulder.
"You finally arrived, you don't know what just happened to me," she says and I deny it, "they just canceled me for tonight."
"Stace, nothing's wrong." We entered the Spa after saying goodbye to Alex, confirmed the appointment and waited a while in the waiting room reading some magazines.
"What have you heard from him?" She asks out of nowhere.
"I haven't heard anything. I'm sure he'll be at the dance today, he's one of the majority investors, I remember. What was your decision? The conscious, not the stupid and immature," she warns.
"I'm between telling him and him hating me for lying and not telling him before or taking the risk and not telling him and my baby being born without ever knowing who the father was," I say turning to look at her.
"We both know what the decision is, don't we?" She looks at me expectantly.
"Do not tell him?" She murmured under her breath. "Believe me if you don't tell him I will, whether you hate me for the rest of your life or love me for fixing it. You can't be so selfish and deprive him of his right as a parent."
"I really want to avoid a disaster with Dad, there is a lot at stake, important things to know his character when he gets angry, he will not be very cute."
"The only thing at stake here is your happiness and the well-being of your baby," she clarifies.
"Girls it's time, your turn is ready" We got up following the girl.
[...]
He was ready, made up, combed and changed. She was just waiting for Alex, who was taking forever. Meanwhile I was eating a delicious cake that remained in the refrigerator.
"I'm ready," Alex says, popping into my field of vision.
"Finally," he murmured, "It was worth the wait." He fixes himself slightly.
