A little reminder of the Boy's fear of the dark. Or rather a new aspect? The Boy counting is a detail but it shows he knows how long the light stays on; his fear had "shaped" him, it's the kind of things he made sure to know. (and he presses again on all floors, as a precaution).
Mr Gaston acting like the mirror character here, highlighting Tera's strength and youth, which the Boy doesn't acknowledge for now lol.
PS. Those Parisian doors the Boy struggles to open at the beginning are very heavy.
