"Did Charlotte do anything before she started working for the castle?"
"Uh...she served for a while, fought in a couple of mini wars between angels and demons. Why?" Zachary asks looking up from the papers in front of him.
"Why'd she leave? And why a maid?" Lilith frowned.
"Heh, she's not really a maid. She's a guard of sorts. When I was younger Dad assigned her to me while she was on a break in her military career, she only adopted the maid thing 'cause she didn't mind." Zachary smiles at the memory. When he was Lilith's age he was a bit of a handful imagine his reaction when he found out a girl three years older than his little sister was assigned to babysit him. He wasn't too fond of that idea and he made it clear. He'd try to shake her only to turn around and find her standing a foot away with a smile on her face. He was 29 and Charlotte was 26 she was much more mature than him even now and he's 32 now. "I wanna know more. What wars did she serve in, what happened, and did she get injured? All of it." Lilith demands sitting down in the guest chair across from her brother.
"I can't." Zachary smiles.
"Why not?"
"Not my stories to tell." Zachary smiles, "Talk to her. She needs that. Trust, truth, and loyalty, show her that and she'll do the same." Charlotte nods slowly, on her way out of her brother's office an idea drifts through her head.
The next day Charlotte goes to wake Lilith only to find the princess already awake and sitting up in bed. A chill rolls down Charlotte's spine, "What are you doing?"
"Just thinking. You served right?" Lilith asks turning her body to face the shorter woman.
"8 years, why?" Charlotte asks setting a tray holding a mug of coffee, some creamer, and sugar down in front of the princess.
"What was it like? Did you get injured?" Lilith asked a little too enthusiastically as she nearly spilled the tray.
"Well...it was war." Charlotte frowned. Sighing when she realized Lilith wanted more details. "I got injured, yeah. Blown up a few times...stabbed.." Charlotte says her hand rising to cover a spot a few inches away from her belly button,"...Why?"
"Just wondering...Can I see them? The scars." Lilith asks pointing to Charlotte's hand. Charlotte flinches, she's shown others her scars before...they didn't react well. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have-" She was cut off by Charlotte raising her shirt to show a scar as wide as a blade. It looked like the stone that held the sword only the sword was no longer there. There were several other scars that littered Charlotte's torso but that one scar took the show. How had she survived? "I know it's ugly-" Charlotte was cut off by the feeling of fingers brushing the scar a first for a brief moment an unwelcomed feeling that slowly turned into the best feeling in the world. It felt healed. Yes, it was physically healed. But there was still pain. Both physically and mentally. And now, with one light touch...it was lifted off her shoulders. Not completely off but she wasn't carrying it on her own. Charlotte watched as Lilith's fingers traced the fine line before moving on to all the other ones, making sure to trace every detail when she was finished she gently pulled away with a mumble of "beautiful" before smiling as she looked up to meet the older womans gaze. And all Charlotte could do was run. Run away as fast as she could well...walk. With the whisper of 'be right back'.
This wasn't supposed to happen. She can't fall in love. Lilith doesn't deserve that. She deserves better than her. After that all Lilith gets is a cold shoulder, Charlotte starts to shove dates in front of Lilith and avoids being alone in a room with her for longer than she has to. It's not until the gala Lilith's father decided to throw in hopes to move the courting along that Charlotte is forced to be in a room with the princess alone.
"Well, how do I look?" Lilith asks giving a twirl. Lilith's wearing a red lace dress that didn't leave much to the imagination but in her opinion, Charlotte looked much better. As Charlotte was her servant she was forced to attend the gala as well so she threw on the fanciest thing she had, a white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows and a black vest and black dress pants finishing it off with black dress shoes. "You look beautiful."
"Right back at you," Lilith smiles sauntering over to the shorter woman her hand reaching out to touch where she knows that one scare is on Charlotte's stomach. They stand there watching each other, their eyes raking over the other's lips as they both lean in slowly, "We should go," Charlotte says inches from Lilith's face before stepping back to open the door for the other woman.
