Chapter 1, Page 5 - Meet the Parents, and the Horzz.

Hi Reader,
Early on, I made a conscious decision to have the main character have living parents and not be an edgy orphan. (In the first draft, I found I'd cloned Luke Skywalker). I envisioned mom and dad as the bemused parents from Mean Girls and Easy A. It was fun drawing the parents to illustrate where Bruno and Davi got their features.
I got to figure out what Miles the Horzz would look like. My sister who knows horses, then had to explain how big horses were (Miles the pony would have looked silly), and where saddles should really be placed.
I stopped coloring anything but the magic. I suck at color and it was making the visuals worse, in my opinion. Color will be used for emphasis, when it's important, but not an always on thing. My skills with grayscale and line patterns is improving, getting more confident and bold. Continuity from panel to panel is killing me. You don't know how much rework I did fixing shading and details I did differently in previous panels. Bruno's vest in particular. The random illusions around the city don't please me but I'll figure them out eventually. Google's street view is a great resource for backgrounds. That's a town in Portugal

Ok parents are adorable! I think Bruno's outfit is my favorite, I enjoy seeing how his clothes contextualize his hairstyle and piercings and vice versa. Didn't register the loss of color till you pointed it out. Looking back I will miss seeing Bruno's skin tone specifically. Overall I agree that the story reads better in grayscale. 👌😌 You're doing amazing!
