Chapter 9

Detention

After school, I got a text from Dre saying, “The other girls are just jealous cause you are my wifey. You must be an angel because I have really fallen for you and would like to be in a serious relationship with you. We have a really good vibe and it hurt fi hear yuh question it. Cause you're the only girl for me.”

I shook my head and started to look for Dre but bumped into my sisters instead.

“Sasha a weh mek yuh ina fight today…” Selena asked.

I didn't want to tell my sisters what happened. I was afraid that my sisters would laugh at me and call me a yam head, so in my mind, I started to build up my courage I counted down 3…2…1… then out of nowhere the sprinklers went off. Which made us jump at the same time I saw Victoria walking past with a smile on her face.

Just then the Dean called me and told me to come to detention. I told them that I will see them at home and head to the office.

When I reached I see that everyone was already there.

Mr. Willson the dean said to us that he has some papers to photocopy and told us to be quiet and write 100 lines in our book saying “I should not fight at school.”

They all open their books and pretend to write and as soon as he walked out they close their books except Trina.

“Girl yuh a idiot weh yuh a write dat fah?” Domonique asked Trina.

Trina threw down her pen and closed her book kind of awkwardly "But anyway me talk to Dre and him say uno just jealous and we share something special and we have-” says Trina but ….

“A real good vibe and it hurt to hear you question it….” Dominique continued.

Now all three of us said together “ …. cause you're the only girl for me?” In sync like a choir except for Violet.

“Damn him ah say the same thing to all ah we.” Dominiquie said.

“Watch yah, him fool round wid we and den sleep wid we-” I said.

Trina in shock lean over, “Two ah uno sleep together?!”

“Girl, Dre and me have something special.” I say and flick my hair.

Trina shook her head, “Yeah sure uno share di same pum pum. And yuh sprain my wrist.”

Dominique, said under her breath, “Well yuh nuh only back flip but lay down too.”

“Oh plz Dominique, like everybody nuh know say yuh mouth and front very active.”  I attacked.

“Girl Dre and me belong together yer.” Dominique snap back.

I laughed, “Girl ah my man yer him bring me out last night. Plus him say me ah him wifey, me and him a head captain too anyway.”

“Like him take either a unu seriously.” Trina out brust.

We continue to argue amongst ourselves, Violet who was sitting in the back of the class is starting to get very annoyed by us, “Shut up.”

We all turn to look at her, “Who you a talk to?” Domonqiue asked,

“All a uno me a chat. Look him always call uno babes don't?” We all look at each other then back at Violet.

“Him do that so dat him nuh mix up uno name and ever a talk bout uno have a vibe but never say uno ina a relationship.”

“Gyal yuh deh wid Dre too?” I said, “No girl, but we used to anyway, like which girl Dre nuh deh wid. But a suh every boy stay girl.” Violet answers.

Trina, “You know yuh right and him always make me feel guilty.”

“You know if a boy treat me like that me woulda-...” Violet is cut off.

“You woulda just break up wid him yeah yeah. And him woulda just get a next girl by a morning.” I said and the girls started to turn around.

“No…me woulda do him back the same thing.” Violet said and started to chew her chewing gum.

Just then the dean walks in and tells us to be quiet and finish writing our lines.

When I reached my community I stopped at my friend's Diamond family cafe shop to get some credit to put on my phone and ice cream.

When she came to open her bedroom door her little black cat walked out behind her. I called to her cat while greeting Diamond, “Wah gwan girl, a wah happen to yuh today?”

“Girl me ago tell yuh, mix up gwan.” I had already bought my ice cream so I sat and I explained in detail what I have been up to while I ate.

Derek at the time was still patrolling our community. I wouldn't have possibly known about this yet but long after I found out that Derek's best friend was dead, when he was told by one of the guys that work for him, it was said he yelled out in anger and he pop the trunk and took out his babies, his smith, and west, and loaded them with his silver bullets and went on to kill one of the girls who was turned into a vampire that was hiding in an abandoned house.

After that we called  Makenza out of her hole- I mean house and went to go on the swing.

I puffed my spliff and Diamond pushed me on the swing and my head fell backward to look at Makenza swinging alongside me. Only the sound of the swing and her popping her gum echoed throughout.

It's like I started going on this euphoric trip. Maybe it's because this time I put some strong grabba in my weed, but either way, it felt great.

I stumbled my way to the jungle gym and climbed on top like a drunk person. With my wobbly balance, I looked down at Makenza and asked her to sprinkle pixie dust on us and we started flying around the little playground laughing and fooling around.

When I went home I saw my sisters taking off their outfits and sweats.

They had their octopus tentacles helping them with Sabrina. She was eating a chip so one tentacle held a bag of chips while the other was wrapping her hair and another held a cup.

Selena also had one tentacle holding her clothes and another one her new phone and another her tablet.

They asked how my night was with Dre being all excited to hear every detail. Usually, when I heard Dre's name I would be smiling or blushing but now I don't even want to hear his name, “Cah talk bout it yet. Weh mommy say?” I asked while walking towards the fridge and stripping off my shoes.

“We tell her say you gone ah Diamond yard and we even make Diamond talk to her pon di phone.” I almost took a sigh of relief.

“But girl she mad cah she say she never gi yuh permission fi stay out over Diamond yard. So it probably never work.” Selena says while wrapping herself in her towel.

I got a message from Dre asking why I haven't been texting him all day. I ignored him and started texting another guy that I know likes me. I then called him and asked if he wanted to go out the next day, which he agreed to.

I went to the couch when Dre texted me asking why I was asking out his friends, he called me and I answered him by accident, that's the lie I wanted to tell myself. He started shouting at me asking me why I ignored him and if I knew that he was worried about me.

We argued over the phone for a bit. I ended it saying, “Don't baby me, like seriously cah believe me lay down wid yuh.” I said and hung up the phone throwing it down in the cough.

I buried my hands in my lap and arms and cried then said "Dah day yah cah get nuh worse.” I probably shouldn't have said that.

Just then the door opens and mom walks in. I lifted my head up and both our eyes met. Mommy didn't hesitate to grab me and started to hit me on my arm.

“Sasha go fi me belt out a di freezer.” My mother demanded.

“Mommy just please…” She lifted her hand again and I jumped over the couch without turning around.

I took the belt out of the freezer, then my sisters walked out, “Mommy we a beg fi har.” Selena said, then Sherise's eyes glared at her with fire.

“You don't bada talk enuh cah all ah uno ina ah trouble fi a lie to me enuh. Uno think me born yesterday me go to Diamond parents and dem say Sasha neva even ova deh.” She then turns to me, “So tell me Sasha weh yuh did deh?” With tears running down my cheeks already I was scrambling another lie, “Honestly mommy me did sleep over me other friend-... fi help wid homework.” My mother gave me a death stare.

“One next lie dat come yah suh.” Sherise says. As she stood there, looking at me, menacingly

Get it ..like that SpongeBob episode with…never mind ..back to my ass whopping.

The breeze from the windows and curtain started to blow really hard and the night got chilly. She puts down her handbag and cracks her knuckles and shoulders.

Then takes her stance as if she was an anime shinobi, all of us three girls' eyes darted to the front door, our only escape since we lived in a 5 story apartment and we were on the 3rd floor.

Then quickly she ran at us and started to beat all three of us relentlessly, we were begging for mercy, “Mommy bill now nuh!” Selena calls out.

She paused for a moment and looked at us in amusement.

“Bill, you really wah me stop, uno feel say uno big now cah uno a 17. Uno a smell uno self.” She says.

“Look at least nuh beat dem ah my fault anyway, we a soon 18 enuh when we turn 20 you ago still a beat we?” I said.

“Den nuh must, as long uno live under my roof den why the hell not!” Our mother exclaims.

“Oh please we have we own ah money now we nuh need fi live wid yuh, we need we own a space anyway and we a mek more money than you now. Yuh eva once ask we a weh we get some ah the things dem we have or weh we get money fi go school. Or yuh nuh care and jus a put on a show, weh if me fi tell yuh say me ah sex from me a 15.” At that Sherise slapped me in my face.

Selena the eldest of us came in between us and held me, “Mommy just gi har some time it seems like she a go through something. Mek we talk to har. But mommy yuh cah beat we fi eva me and Sabrina a turn 20.”

“Oh, suh you ah di smartest out a three Musketeers eh?”

“Di one who repeat 4th form cah him fail him subjects. Yes, talk to him, like say yuh neva lie to me too. You know how much me go through cah mi go lay down and go deh wid man. If me neva have unu me woulda betta off ina life but no. Me shoulda put uno ina a basket and swing uno ova me head and dash uno weh!” Our mom shouts.

Sabrina gets up, “You ah ova do it now mommy don't blame we fi you lack a capability, We tired ah yuh a say yuh shouldn't have we if yuh neva want we somebody must woulda want we.”

“Like who?” mom starts to laugh, “Yuh nuh see say uno wukless puppa not even did want uno a who ago want uno. Eh is either my way or the high way a which one…cah uno nah go tell me how fi raise uno and uno not even know how fi raise enuh self.”

“You know wah mek we leave yuh place fi true, cah me wah know a who a cook the food in yah like a nuh we cook and clean weh yuh think we get the money from fi buy food and the new laptop fi school. If we ask yuh fi something yuh eva ah a say yuh nave nuh money. Suh we nuh bada yuh but yuh eva have money fi fix up and go out.” Sabrina says and walks with me while going to the room.

“Den a weh uno get di money from fi buy di laptop nuh you tell me say uno cousin lean uno, di three ah uno ah liars eh.” Sherise yells at us,

“We ah pole dancer ah dat we do dat ah how we get di money, we able fi get the things dem weh yuh nuh wah get we. We shake we ass and get cash.” Selena blurts out. Then mom slaps her also across her face hard enough that she falls to the ground.

“Uno come outta me place. Come outta me house uno damn ungrateful!” She shouts at the top of her lungs.

Then runs into the room and takes up the clothes and started throwing everything outside in her frantic and fast movement she took up one of our suitcases and it became unlocked and stacks of money fell out of it, we hurry to grab the money and the rest of our things and suitcase and uniforms and went out the house and hurried out the apartment.

We then went on our phones and went to a hotel for the night.
