The thing about Jackson, or more like the things about Jackson. He can be a jerk sometimes. In fact, we broke up for a few months when we were 18 because he was forcing me to do things I didn't want to do, and taking our relationship too far. We got back together, but he hasn't stopped cheating on me. "Hello? Earth to Abbie!" I hear a deep voice say. It's Jackson, of course. "I'm here. I was just thinking." I say. Just then the door to the classroom opens and a girl rushes in. She's gorgeous. She looks at me, and then walks up to the teacher's desk. She says something and Mr. Smith nods. Then she walks towards me and sits next to me. "Hi! I'm Kat, my pronouns are she/they/he. I'm genderfluid and demisexual." "Nice to meet you, Kat. I'm Abbie, they/them, nonbinary, and pansexual." I say and we shake hands. I can feel my face warming up as I start to blush. No, this isn't right. I shouldn't blush. I have a boyfriend. Remember Jackson. "And I'm Jackson, he/they, demiboy, polysexual." Jackson says, then looks at me and says, "Abbie's boyfriend." "For now." I say. "Hey, what's that supposed to mean?" he asks me. "Nothing, nothing, calm down! I'm just joking!" I say, and start to laugh. But it's too late. He took it to seriously.
20 year old enby Abbie Keller is just starting a new chapter of their life. They were kicked out of the house at age 15 when they came out as nonbinary and pansexual, and started living with their best friend, Jackson. Shortly after Abbie moved in, Jackson asked them out. The two have been dating since age 16, but their relationship has been hitting some rough patches lately. They're attending the same college, but Abbie isn't enjoying this college. They want to go to medical school and become a doctor, not study English Arts with their boyfriend. Will Abbie break up with Jackson and achieve her dreams or will Jackson break things off? What caused these two to break up and stop contacting each other? "What Next?" tells the story of how Abbie learns to live without Jackson, and finds new love as well.
