Figuring out how to portray shakiness was an interesting dilemma. Seatbelts definitely improve performance during emergencies, because you're in your seat instead of on the floor. *coughStarTrekcough*

I always assumed that the lack of seat belts in the original Star Trek was to show off Uhura's thighs. Note that every time the ship took a solid hit, she'd fall over sideways and her skirt would ride up.
