In a sudden and breathless move, Jack, quickly followed by Lea, swoop in through the doors. Waiting a moment and following in, Six steps though. A step behind Six, Ruby cautiously walks in.
A creak too close causes Jack to throw the halt. Waiting a moment, he begins to sign the all clear when suddenly rushed by two zombies.
Lea tries to pull them off and is hit but a charging undead herself. Caught off guard, the rotting beast sinks its teeth into her shoulder before tossing her on the ground.
As she lay on the dirty high school floor, she looks to Jack, slumped over and dead. The two zombies, already moving on to the still living prey behind her.
As Six tries to flip around to head to the exit, the two undead roll over him like angry bulls. Six slams to the ground, his head hitting the floor with a sickening crunch.
As his vision clouds, and he loses consciousness, he sees Ruby being attacked as Pete, Quinn, and Scout shut the door behind them. The blackness seeps in as he remarks to himself how the zombies in this town are far more dangerous than they are used to.
Inky darkness, blurry gray mess. “Six! Wake up Six! If you are ever gonna wake up, it’s now, kid.”
A strike of blinding hot pain radiates from his face as he jolts awake. “Ah! Fuck! Did you have to hit me?!” Six exclaims as he rubs his face.
“Sorry kid but I had to get you up.” Jack says as he unties Six from the hospital bed he is in.
“What’s going on? I saw you die. How did I get here?” Six says as Jack helps him to his feet.
“I’ll explain everything after we escape.” Jack says as he tries to pull him along.
Still woozy from his injuries, six stumbles and stops to rest against a bed. “Basics Jack. I need to understand the situation.”
Grumbling to himself, “fine.”
“Three points. First, I did die. The zombies are really messed up in this town. I turned, but I also didn’t. As far as I know, so did Lea and Ruby.”
“Am I a Zombie too?” Six says as he stares at his hands.
“No kid. You didn’t die. That leads to point two, it has been two weeks since that day. You cracked your head open and were hurt bad. Scout flagged down the wild hunt and sent them in, then they found you.”
“They have some legit doctors apparently, so they set up a temporary little hospital to treat you in exchange for some deal with Scout. After about a week, Ruby woke up. Still herself but not right in the head. She ran off into town. Next was Lea, they questioned her for days. They really wanted to know how they survived. Finally, I came back and by then, they set up a whole military encampment. I was questioned, same as Lea.”
“Now for the really crazy part. Point three, When we came back, we came back different. After talking to Lea for a while, we each have a different sort of connection to the undead. She thinks she can talk to them. Control them even. I, on the other hand, can feel them. It’s almost like a six sense but the best part is I’ve been practicing. I can call them to me. I’ve been gathering them nearby and tonight, I sent out the dinner bell.” Jack says with a bit of a deranged look on his face. A face of someone who hasn’t slept in years.
“So, it sounds like you are delusional, Jack.” Six says with the most sincere tone.
Loud, head rattling alarms begin blaring all around them. Shout from outside the tent. “It’s begun. We have to move. Now Six.”
Stealthy moving out of the back of the tent, the flaps open to a truly apocalyptic scene. A hoard of zombies destroying the encampment. Looking at Jack with horrified realization, “you were actually serious.”
