It took a while, but Lily followed me. The bathroom on the first floor was locked, so we went to the second floor.
"So, are you enjoying yourself?" Lily asked. As we passed a couple kissing in the bathroom door, right below them there was a drunk guy, sleeping? Passed out?
"It's not the worse, but that friend of yours..." I hesitated, putting my hand where his were.
"Yeah, Brad can be a bit much. He tried calling me out once. He's not my type. But he's not the worse either"
"Well. I'm glad you at least managed to find your type." I said, looking at her smeared lipstick.
"We're just friends... With benefits." She fixed her hair and looked at me in the mirror. "See, that's why we got to go out more."
"I agree, but I think these types of parties just aren't my thing."
"I think you need some social lubricant." Finishing retouching her lipstick, she continued, "Did you get anything from the bar?"
"There are too many options."
"You can pick anything you want." She said, giving me a bill, "Y'know what? pick a drink for both of us, on me." She said adamantly.
Leaving the bathroom with determined steps. The DJ was playing a slow rock song I never heard before. People were swaying to it. The line in the bar was shorter.
While waiting, I looked through the list of drinks, deciding on what the hell should I pick. I don't drink a lot, and when I do drink, it's some sort of sweet wine. And I reckon they wouldn't be serving ports here.
It was finally my turn, and I still hadn't decided. So I thought, 'you know what? Fuck it. I'm just going to let someone pick for me.'
Looking around the line, there were some people patiently waiting for me to move on. I decided not to ask them. The bartenders should have an expert opinion about this, but they might also just tell me anything to make me move on. I looked to the side and there was a guy. He was here the last time I came to pick a soda. He has the free time. So let's disturb his conversation to end my trivial debate.
"Ayo, my name's Abbie. Nice to meet you." I introduced myself. No handshakes this time.
He turned around, and I could swear his eyes were red as they ran across my body. I looked again, and they were light brown.
"Hi, I'm Cris." He tilted his head, lifting his eyebrow. "Do I know you?"
"No. I was..." I stuttered, pulling on my skirt. "I was wondering what drink I should... Um drink. I-I mean, there's so many options to choose from.... Soo Which one do you think I should pick?" I got my words out, fidgeting with my arm.
He messed with his hair, which was pretty long, and blonde, tied up in a bun. There was a streak running from his eyebrows to his hairline.
"I'm not good with drinks either." He smiled. I was trying my best to look into his eyes, but I couldn't. "Do you like coffee?"
"Oh yeah, I-I love coffee." 'Is it weird to love coffee?'
"Then, you should try the Darkbuzz. But be careful, it's strong."
Before he could finish I said, "Yeah, thank you." and turned around to the bartender, "2 Darkbuzzes please." Moving on to the side. Shortly after, the line entered in between me and the guy, which was good, cause after that, I never have to see him again.
* * *
The Darkbuzz is composed of Rum, Tequila, Gin and 3 shots of espresso. At least that's what my google search told me after the fact. The bartender mixed and poured the black liquid into a plastic cup, with 2 ices. I took a sip of mine on the way to give Lily hers. The taste of coffee was overwhelming, but the alcohol carried itself through.
"Holy shit, Bibi! This is pretty strong." she said gulping down a good amount of it.
"It's fine." I said, bobbing my head to whatever the DJ was playing. But I was annoyed because I wanted to hear something more energetic. "What's this guy playing?" I asked. My words came out faster than I thought they would. My cup was half full.
"It's Martha's band, I think."
"Who the fuck is Martha?" I asked, sounding harsher than I would've liked.
"The owner of the house."
I put my hand on my mouth, "I'm sorry Martha." saying like she could hear me. "But I wanted to dance to something."
"I've never seen you dance before."
"I dance." I said. "Y'know what? I'm going to ask the DJ to put something for us to dance."
"I definitely want to see that." she laughed, grabbing my hand as I went to the DJ.
We got up to him. He took one of his headphones off.
"could you play, like..." I didn't know what song I wanted actually, but it wasn't what he was playing. Rummaging through my brain, I came up with, "Call me maybe from Rae?"
Feeling pretty happy with myself, I went to the bar to grab a second drink. While waiting in line, I caught a glimpse of that guy still sitting there. I had already forgotten about him. But, I thought I should thank him properly. I poked him in the shoulders and he turned to me.
"Hey it's me again... Thank you." My hands extended for a shake. His were slender, but soft. His grip was firm. "For the drink, y'know, it's pretty good."
"Okay." He smiled, "You're welcome."
I grabbed my drink and gave the guy a thumbs up. Bumping into Brad on his way out with a girl. His lips were red. Her lips were red. But he still gave me his number. I gulped down half my cup after that, and the next song started.
"Oh my god! It's my song!" I yelled at Lily, who was laughing. Probably of my dancing prowess. It didn't matter how much I flailed, I managed not to spill a drop of my drink. I think that's an ability drunk people have.
The surrounding people started dancing as well. The DJ changed the song, and I caught my 3rd drink. It bothered me that the people weren't having as much fun as we were having. I mean, how could you miss out on that? So I went to the people at the tables to call them to dance. Some followed me, some just stayed where they were... 'Stuck ups.'
I couldn't find Lily in the middle of what now had become a dance floor. I just started dancing with random people. At some point, I went to the bar again and hit that guy on the shoulder.
"Hey... It's me again."
"It sure is."
"I think you should dance with me." I said. He laughed, looking at his friend. "You can come too." I pointed at him. That was when my 4th drink got ready. Thinking about the hassle of dancing with a cup in my hand again, I just turned everything at once.
"Why not?" He got up, and I grabbed their hand, pulling them to the middle of the crowd.
I was still holding his hand as we both flailed around. I noticed he had dimples as he smiled. He was bad at dancing too, so at least I didn't feel left out. I finally saw Lily in the middle of the crowd. She was hitting her wrist, but she didn't have a watch on. 'That's silly.'
"I think I have to go..." I pouted. He motioned that he couldn't hear it. "It was nice to meet you." I shouted in his ear.
That's when I felt my stomach turn. I put my hand on my mouth, but everything came out at once. At the floor, at the guy. His eyes were bright red and everything went dark.
