Heart Piercings

Ch 10: Goodnight Text

Ch 10: Goodnight Text

Mar 29, 2023

Sam only had a 30 - 45 minutes break which she used to talk to Chris. Their meeting was straight to the point, and although Chris still talked a lot, it was the most serious Sam had ever seen her, and she was astonished.

By the time they were through, they had settled on what days and times, naturally her off days. Sam didn't bother much about the pay as Chris did, but that didn't mean she would want to miss out on the extra money.

Sam's break was over, so she immediately left to continue her job. Christine came to the counter to bid goodbye, but Sam only replied with a 'hmm' and nodded.

When she had gone, Sam stopped what she was doing. She had been stacking and unstacking cups behind the counter so Christine would think she was busy and leave. Why did she even need to do that? She could have just ignored it or maybe walked away. And why the hell did she feel that it would hurt Christine? When did hurting her even matter? Sam sighed heavily, too tired to think further, and rested on the cabinet behind her.

"It's just the beginning, and you're already having it this tough?" The familiar voice spoke from beside her, and Sam whipped her head in the direction where it came from.

Jane smiled and continued. "She really adores you." She dropped a small stack of used cups in the sink behind the counter.

Sam couldn't help but gawk at the situation. Jane had never spoken to her much or more like she never had the chance to. She listened anyway but found it stupid and ridiculous. Adored? There's no way that was true.

Jane seemed to notice the look on her face, but she only smiled and continued. "I can tell she likes you a lot." Jane was now resting the same way Sam did as she spoke.

They had just reopened after their lunch break and didn't have customers yet, and Sam prayed they did. She would do anything than listen to Jane. She avoided people for this very reason. They tend to be nosy and always in your business.

"You can always tell everything, Jane," Sam shook her head. However, she was curious to know why Jane thought that way, so she indulged in the conversation. "How so?" She asked, looking at Jane with no expression at all.

"Rude," Jane rolled her eyes at Sam, who shrugged. She sighed and answered anyways. "The way she looks at you," Jane replied.

That was it? Sam almost laughed but restrained herself and just hummed a reply. "Hmmm." Whatever Jane thought was meaningless, Christine would stare at a dog or a plant with those same sappy doe eyes. Thankfully a pair of customers walked in, ending their conversation.

Sam refused to ponder much on the issue as her day went on as usual, and she now served drinks for a lady at the bar. She slouched over the counter and was trying to make a conversation with Sam.

"You've got some nice booze," The lady spoke, her speech slurry from excess alcohol. "The whiskey too."

Sam smiled and said, "I'm glad you think that." She continuously cleaned some glasses and kept them aside while the lady watched her. "Is there anything else?" Sam said with slight annoyance in her voice.

"No, nothing really. I'm Amanda" The lady stretched her hand towards Sam, who chose not to take it.

Sky watched the scene as he served a table not far from them. He found it amusing how Sam still couldn't interact with different kinds of people. After serving, he headed directly toward them.

"Uh hey, we need some more drinks from the back," He said to Sam, and she thankfully took the hint and left.

She knew that the 'Amanda' lady was flirting with her, but she didn't have the patience to talk with people, and fortunately, Sky understood. She never figured out why people flirted or what the point was in doing so. Picking only one box, she started walking back, she didn't need to add to the shelf, but she took it anyways.

By the time she arrived, Sky was alone, sitting on a stool beside the one Amanda had been sitting on.

"Hey," Sky said as Sam walked towards him. It was just a few minutes past eight which meant that the bar would get very busy at any moment, plus different bands were already lining up. Usually, they would already have been, but today was one of those days.

"Hey," Sam stacked the drinks in the box one after the other till it was empty. She turned around and continued, "thanks for that." Walking towards the counter, she finished with the glasses she had earlier cleaned.

"Come on. You don't need to thank me," Sky said, twirling on the stool. Just then, Sam received a text from an unknown number.

'Hey, just wanted to say goodnight.'

Sam frowned at the text. Who the hell was this? She was about to ignore the message, but Sky, as curious as ever, asked about it.

"Who was it? Why won't you reply? Wait, since when do you get texts?" Sky rushed all the questions at once, annoying her with each pause.

"Piss off, Sky. We've got work to do," she said, walking to the other side of the counter to avoid his question, but this was Sky.

He got up and stood across her and pestered her further.

"I seriously don't know who it is, ok?" She brought out her phone and showed Sky the number. Why was he always so overbearing? She couldn't help but groan at the whole situation.

"Well, answer it!" Sky sat on the stool closest to him. He knew he was slacking off and had work serving drinks, but he left it to Freddie and the others. "At least you'll know who it is," He said, placing both elbows on the counter to support his chin.

Sam sighed and mumbled, "whatever." She reopened the text and started typing before she pressed the send button. 'who is this?'

The reply that came was fast, which was pretty unexpected. Sam was about to place her phone back in her pocket but had to bring it out again. Opening the text, Sam blinked twice and breathed out the only word that came to her mind. 'Damn.'

That level of awkwardness is quite an achievement! Though to be fair to Sam, unwanted drunken flirting is the worst!
