My legs were burning as I chased Leondre and Gabriel across the city. Luckily I was fast so the catching up bit wasn’t too hard, but keeping up with them with my shit stamina was proving to be extremely difficult.
I froze as I saw what was going on, a building, or its remains, were on the ground in a massive wreck, people were screaming, running, or trying to get their children out from under the rubble. It seems it had been some sort of apartment building. Leondre lept into action immediately, helping a crying mother pull her son out from the rubble. Gabriel was standing still, like me, except I think he was frozen for a different reason, he looked conflicted, as if he didn’t know whether to watch or help.
I looked around, trying to make sense of the situation. A building had collapsed. People were running, trapped and trying to help others. Nobody at the scene seems like they were expecting it so it likely wasn’t an organised attack, or an attack at all. So the reason for collapse doesn’t matter right this second as there isn’t anybody here that has the intention of causing more harm. That means the most logical option is to join in helping people.
I sped over to a pile of rubble where a child was yelling and crying.
“Hey, what is it?” I made my voice as soft and gentle as possible, crouching down to them.
“My- My b-brothers in there.” She sobbed, pointing to the rubble. My heart dropped as I saw her face, I knew the look in her eyes all too well, the desperate look of someone who’s world just fell apart but they don’t want to admit defeat just yet. Soon that look would turn numb, cold, and she would grow up spending the rest of her childhood without her brother.
“O-Okay.. I’ll help him. It’ll all be okay.” I attempted to reassure her. I’ve got to try sound confident, even if I’m not. Just like Leo tried to do for me in terrifying situations. Memories of Leo started flooding back to me and I shook them away as fast as they came. I took a deep breath and started attempting to move chunks of concrete.
My hands were aching, I had to of been looking for about twenty minutes by now and there was still no sign of the girls brother.
I didn’t want to admit it, but I was starting to doubt that kid was alive. My hands ached. My legs hurt from leaning on them. I looked around, Leondre was still helping people, showing no sign of tiredness or pain. Gabriel had started helping, also showing no signs of slowing down.
Was I really the only one who wanted to stop? I guess I am just that weak. I sighed and hung my head.
“You really are just useless, aren’t you?”
I heard myself gasp, I think. What the fucks going on? I looked up, in case I was imagining it. My father was standing in front of me, smiling. I already felt myself wanting to cry. How and why was he here? This isn’t even the city he’s meant to be in?
I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked to see who it was. Familiar black hair, green caring eyes, navy hoodie.. A confusing feeling rose to the surface, Leo?! But he’s dead, what the actual fuck is happening.
