One night as the men were sneaking along the path they were halted by Lord Andras at the front of the line.
“Ho Men! Look ahead of us” Whispered Lord Andras. “Someone approaches, treading the mountain road. Who could it be that comes down from the dragon's lair?”
“Some beguiling dragon magic I expect,” Said Druis. “Be on your guard in case it is an emissary of the beast.”
As the figure drew nearer the men silently drew their swords. Sir Rodrick peered through the gloom trying to see who it was that was coming toward them. The person approaching came into view suddenly. To his amazement it was Princess Epona. Clad in white and carrying a silver harp. “Princess Epona!” He cried, “How is it that you have escaped?”
At this some of the men bowed, but some were unconvinced. “She may be an illusion, another trick of the dragon!’ they said, remembering the three witches in the underworld.
“She may not be.” Said Druis sagely. “Is there a way you can prove to us that you are truly the princess?”
“I know a way,” said the Princess, “That sword you hold” She indicated Sir Rodrick,” my father had that made when I was born, as a weapon to protect me and the kingdom.”
“Half of the kingdom knows that!” Said Druis, “That is no great secret.”
“Ah but look at the hilt” She said, “Therein lies three runes in the ancient language. One for my father, one for my mother, and one for me.”
Rodrick showed the hilt to Druis who could read such runes. As he read the royal families names aloud in the old tongue a curious thing happened. The sword began to glow with that inner golden light they had so often seen reflected on it.
“You see that sword is sworn to protect me. It glows with the heart of the kingdom at the sound of my name.”
Sir Rodrick’s eyes welled up with regard. Forgetting his humble station he stepped forward and embraced the princess. “So long I had feared for you!” He said. Ever since the dragon took you I had thought all was lost. But now that I see you before me I feel a new hope within me. As if this battle can be won after all. But how is it that you have escaped Terranis?”
“I fear we must wait for that answer,” Interrupted Lord Andras, “We now need to find a place to hide for the day. The morning approaches fast and the dragon will be searching for you princess.”
The party made their way into a hidden cleft in the rocks before the sun rose and when they were safely hidden form the dragon the princess told them her story.
