The police secured Vincenzo, the other two terrorists, and unfortunately they had to take Roxanne into custody too, but we’ll vouch for her if we get the chance, and so will everyone else. We kept our disguise up, good call since the journalists immediately tried to interview us as soon as someone told them what we did. “We’re minors and ask for no media attention.”
It pissed off the woman, but at least she left us alone. “Tch, damn zoomers, I miss the times when kids didn’t know their rights.”
The manager managed to hide with the rest of the crowd, good for him. Our parents were all waiting for us, and we finally started crying as soon as they come to hug us. Now that the adrenaline is gone, we’re realizing how damn terrifying the whole situation was. My sister is there too and she’s the one hugging me the hardest. “I was so scared! I’m so sorry Kolten, I really mean it! The thought that something could’ve happened to you before we made up was killing me!”
I kiss her on the forehead, still crying. “Sniff, we’re good, sorry for making you worry!”
The police are helping the people who are still in shock, but we’re doing good, so as soon as we gave our testimony of the events we were let free to go back home. I still can’t believe that we managed to save so many people. Weird stuff happened, and we managed to survive, now all I want to do is jump on the bed and sleep for as long as I can.
It’s the monday after the attacks. The city went back to normality, and people isn’t worried anymore. As far as I know, everyone who was at the mall is doing fine, the only major casualties were the glass at the entrance of the mall, and the scars on Emil’s mind, only the latter can’t be fixed.
Turns out that every single attempt of a terrorist attack at Sogna never went through, it might be a coincidence, or it might be the providence of our divinities, they’ll never admit it and we’ll never know.
We went back to school today, my hair is finally back to normality, and even Ari woke up without his bear ears the day after the attack. They saved us all, what great timing.
We don’t want people to know what we did, so they’ve only been told that we were there during the attacks, although many don’t look too convinced. We met Emil on the stairs, and he’s still dead inside. I had to apologize for the things we had him do, but he understood that it was for a good reason. Still, I haven’t seen a single expression on his face today.
There’s one thing we stopped hiding, though, so we can cherish every moment together without having to worry about the others. “Huh? Huh??? Are you two holding hands?!”
Ron noticed right away. Mina is the one who speaks, “yeah, we’ve been dating for a while now. Say one word too much and I won’t speak to you all ever again.”
Our friends know that whenever she says something like that, she means it, so they don’t comment on it. “C-congrats then.”
When school is over she comes home with us, I think we’d rather spend some time inside for a while. We might not be traumatized, but we crave the safety of the walls of our homes. “We’re home!”
“Welcome back. Hello Mina, I’m glad you came!”
She smiles at my mom, “It’s been a while since I last came over, thanks for having me!”
Mom loves Mina, she was so happy when I told her that we were dating. “Ari, a package arrived with your name on it, it’s on the table.”
Ari looks confused. “I wasn’t expecting any package, though. I wonder what it is…”
He opens the package, and inside we find some very luxurious-looking sweets with an ice pack to keep them fresh. “What?! I didn’t order any of this!”
I notice an envelope on the bottom. “Ari, look at that. Mind if I read it?”
He’s already biting on a cream puff. “Fhure, go on.”
The letter is written in elegant handwriting and smells like chocolate.
Dear Ari,
my name is Rea. I wanted to apologize for every issue caused by the “spell” I put on you. I’m not officially part of the group of divinities that inhabit Sogna, but I am a divinity too, born from a bear, and I live my life among humans like you.
When I saw your brother walking in the city with his long pink hair I thought that he looked a lot like me, so I tried to conjure a pair of ears on his head to see how he looked with them. They were supposed to be made of spiritual matter so that only me and, inevitably, people with some spiritual affinity could see them. However, a sequence of unfortunate events occurred, and I cast my spell on you instead, who was walking beside him, conjuring a pair of ears made of a state of matter visible to everyone. My plan was to make them last just for a short while, but it looks like they took some time to “sprout”, and you had to keep them for a whole day.
I am very sorry, it all happened due to my inadequate skills and especially due to my selfishness, you even risked your life, although you ended up saving a lot of people. These gifts can’t possibly repay you for the things you went through, but I hope they can make your day a little better.
Feel free to come to visit my patisserie or call me, I left a card in the box: I am in huge debt to you and will gladly give you some orders on the house.
I also beg you not to share all this information with other people, as I would like to keep living my life as a human, but I think I can trust you on this matter. I hope you’ll accept my deepest apologies, and that you’re doing better now.Rea Barre
“A divinity? Now everything makes sense” - I guess I also ended up forgetting about googling it.
Ari looks so happy. “Woohoo, free sweets! She sounds so nice, I want to meet her! Ah, you two weren’t supposed to know.”
I shrug, “I read the letter, after all. Well, we can keep the secret, unlike you.”
He pouts at me, “have some faith in your brother! I won’t say a thing, she ended up helping us all after all, although it was an accident!”
That’s very true. “We were directly involved, so I guess it’s fine if it’s just the three of us. Mom, did you hear anything?”
“Nope, don’t know anything about bear gods!”
“Good.”
And so, our adventure is over and this mystery is solved. I kinda miss looking at those cute, soft ears, I wish I gave them one more nibble.
Oh well, it is what it is.
