Heart Piercings

Ch 11: Goodnight Text II

Ch 11: Goodnight Text II

Apr 10, 2023

Sam rubbed her temples and sighed gravely. Why was this always happening? Where had she gone wrong? She stared at her phone while Sky tried to get her attention, hoping to know who had texted.

The short reply was enough to throw Sam off balance. 'It's Christine.' So simple, but yet so annoying. How could she forget that she had given out her number to Chris? Thinking about it now, it felt dumb when she had not saved the number when she had the chance.

"Well?" Sky said, poking Sam's arm persistently. He waved at Sam, who just ignored him and started texting again.

'I told you only contact me if it's extremely important!' Sam replied. She placed the phone in her pocket and started cleaning the glasses, s ignoring Sky.

"I have work to do at the moment, so consider yourself lucky," Sky said, getting up from the stool. "But I'll get to know sooner, but I'm pretty sure it's Chris." He finally said before leaving to take orders.

Sam dropped the glass she held on the counter and sighed. How come Sky was accurate during situations like these? These people were assaulting her patience. She rubbed her temples again.

A few more people sat at the counter, and she served them drinks, trying her best to input one or two sentences into their conversations. Meanwhile, her phone buzzed in her pocket. It made her regret giving out her number in the first place, but she had already done so, and there was nothing she could do about that.

After a while, she brought out her phone to check out the messages from Christine.

'Saying goodnight is important,' the first text read. Sam shook her head and read through the second and third. 'Also, I wanted you to have my number too. So anyway, goodnight again.'

Sam couldn't figure out whether to reply or not. Would it seem rude if she didn't? Sam had never decided on something like this before, and it continuously gave her a headache. Usually, she wouldn't even bother, but it was different now.

As she thought of what to reply, she saw another message from Chris. It was a single beating heart sticker with an arrow piercing through. It made Sam cringe so much that she immediately put her phone back in her pocket.

The confusion ran haywire in her head. Why?. Her phone didn't receive any other text- much to her relief, as she had no intention of ever replying to Chris, at least for now.

The rest of the night went as usual, and Sky didn't get to talk to her until it was 3 am. The bar was full due to the Halloween season, and there were discounts on drinks which was a rare occasion.

"Do you know who texted yet?" Sky was behind the counter with her this time. He had gone for a new batch of drinks and was now refilling the shelf.

Sam sighed before replying. "It was Chris." Just as she had expected, Sky sprung from where he was and stood before her.

"Really?" Sky said with over excitement. "Did she say anything else?" he added and continued to stack the drinks.

"Nothing much," Sam replied, trying to keep their chat to a minimum. It was already so late, and she was tired. She had seen Sky dozing off a while ago, so it bothered her much why he wasn't tired. "Take over the counter for a while. I need to sit." She said, walking away.

"Aww, I still wanted to talk." Sky pouted as he complained but went ahead with it anyways. "You'll have to tell me everything later." He called out to Sam.

"There's nothing to tell," Sam said, waving at Sky, and continued walking till she got to where the tables were and sat at an empty one. After a while, she took her phone and opened Chris's message again. She saw the heart sticker there, and no matter how long she stared at it, it still made her cringe.

She took one last look at the message and noticed that she hadn't saved the name yet. When last had she saved a contact? It was way too long. After saving it with 'Chris,' she dropped her phone and rested on the table and thought for a while.

Moments later, she took over from Sky again- not that there was much to do, but she was already tired of thinking. It was her best shot at avoiding a mental breakdown.

The bar was slow compared to the rush earlier, and there were only about three people, but despite that, time still went by till it was time to leave. She had her hands full for the next few days, but she was free at the bar, which was quite a relief.

As usual, Sam and Sky followed each other out of the bar and walked down the quiet street. It was almost like a routine now for Sky to stay at her place. She would sometimes complain about it, but she was secretly happy that at least she wasn't alone anymore.
