My heart dropped.

Adrien was my partner for the biggest history project of the year. It was worth over fifty percent of our grade.

“You may now move to go sit and discuss what you and your partner’s project will be,” Ms. May said.

I then got up out of my seat and walked swiftly to Adrien’s desk, holding my history binder and pencil in my hands. I pulled up a chair from an empty table and sat down next to Adrien.

“So what do you want to do the history project over?” I asked, as if nothing ever happened between us the other day.

“I don’t know,” Adrien said.

“Well, we could do our project on industrialism, new technologies in warfare, or something else that we have already learned,” I said. “Or we can get real wild and go over something we’ll learn later on this year.”

Adrien stared at me as if he didn’t know what to say, his face full of hurt.

“New technologies in warfare,” Adrien finally said after what seemed like forever. “We can maybe make a fake gun or something.”

“Maybe,” I said, tapping my pencil on the paper in my, now open, binder.

Adrien watched me silently as if unsure what to say.

“I…,” Adrien started. “Can I talk to you later, alone?”

I looked up from my tapping pencil to see guilt in his eyes.

I quickly gave in and said, “Sure.”

Adrien gave me a small smile.

“When?” I asked.

“How about after school I’ll take you to Nuggets?” Adrien said.

Nuggets. That was my sweet spot and Adrien knew it. I was a sucker for my favorite chicken nuggets in the whole world.

“Deal, but you’re paying,” I said.

Adrien and I entered Nuggets and looked around to find a seat.

We quickly found a black booth.

“I’ll go order. Can you save us a spot, please?” Adrien asked.

“Sure,” I said as Adrien walked away.

I quickly slid into one side of the booths and took out my phone. I then tapped on my group chat with Gracie and Riley.

You won’t believe where I am right

now.

Where?  Gracie

At Nuggets. With Adrien.

You’re where? Why?  Riley

He said he needed to talk to me

about something.

Alone.

I don’t like the sound of that.  Riley

Me neither.  Gracie

I quickly glanced up from my phone to see Adrien walking up to our booth carrying two drinks. I glanced back down at my phone and quickly wrote…

I gotta go. Adrien’s back with drinks. I’ll

tell you how our talk went later.

Sorry I've been gone for so long! School has been really draining! The school is almost ending so I should be able to update more soon! Thanks for waiting! :D

Do you ever feel like you don’t belong? Like no matter how hard you try, you’ll never fit in? Well, I do. Hi, my name is Dahlia Elyse Yates. Yes, the Yates. I’m in what most people call the “Perfect Family.”
My family is embarrassed of me. Why? Because I have heterochromia, which makes my eyes two different colors, and vitiligo, which makes my tan skin lose pigment in different places. My family finds it “not normal” or “unnatural.” They mostly call me things like "freak" and "weirdo."
And this is my story about how I learn to accept myself for who I am, against all odds.
