I never thought that I would have a day like this before. In fact, I never thought that I would be this scared in my whole life. I didn't even know that it was possible to be this scared. My heart is beating a million times per minute and my hands are shaking like crazy. My leg feels like jelly and I keep hearing a constant ringing in my head. I never felt all this before, this level of anxiety and fear, it's a foreign feeling to me. But here I am, in a creepy cave that keeps whispering mine and my brother's name over and over again, so much so that I feel like I might hate my own name if this keeps going.
I looked at my little brother who was shaking like a leaf and on the verge of tearing up. His hands were sweaty and tiny whimpers and gasps escaped his mouth every time he breathes in. The little guy's only 6 years old, what can I expect from him? It's all on me, I have to be the one to figure this out. Besides, I am the one who brought us into this mess in the first place. If only I hadn't...
You know what? Let me start from the beginning. You are probably scratching your head thinking, 'What the heck is this lunatic talking about?'. Don't worry, let me just rewind to two days before we got trapped in a cave.
If you didn't skip the intro, you might probably know our names. I am Lera, Leo is my little brother and Cleo is my mean, grumpy, self-esteem-filled older sister. We are a happy family and we live a peaceful life in a small town called water hills. Don't get the wrong idea, our town doesn't have any sort of water bodies except for a small pond in the middle of the woods that surround our town and we have no hills, not even a 2 feet tall mound of dirt except when the construction workers create one, which totally doesn't count. And our life is peaceful except for when Cleo decides to ruin that peace.
Cleo acts as if she's a miss perfect and thinks that she is in charge just because she is the oldest. She is our parent's favorite child because she gets good grades, she's good at painting, sports, and whatsoever and has more than a dozen trophies and medals. But that's not my problem, I am not complaining about her being miss perfect and getting all the attention from our parents. My complaint is why she keeps bugging me and Leo. She's the reason we get scolded by our parents most of the time. Leo is always the one that Cleo points her finger at when she does something wrong and has to blame it on someone. Leo doesn't argue and just listens to all the scolding from our parents and later goes to his room to cry a flood. I support him every time but it's to no avail, our parents believe Cleo over me and Leo. How can they not? She's their perfect daughter.
"Lera! Lera!" Leo's shouts startled me from my thoughts. I am a huge daydreamer. I always have something on my mind. It's sort of a good and bad habit because I lose focus easily due to my daydreaming but it also helps me to escape reality and create one of my own imaginative worlds where there is no Cleo.
"What?" I asked without moving a muscle from my current position. I was laying on a beach chair in our backyard just looking up at the sky still half-lost in my thoughts. But that soon came to an end when I cried out as a frisbee came flying over my head. At first, I thought, 'Great, I am gonna get a broken nose, maybe a black eye, most probably a broken nose.' But then I realized that it passed by me in a few millimeter distance... or a few centimeters, I didn't get the time to measure, but you get the point.
"Hey! What's the big idea?" I got up and shouted, only to see a pale shivering figure of Leo.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to... I-I just..." He started to whimper and stutter. I sighed, that's my little brother right there. He gets scared even when someone raises their voice at him. While I am the total opposite, it takes a lot more to scare me, I can watch a horror movie without flinching even once. I find horror movies dumb, we all know that ghosts aren't real. 'Ghosts aren't real', the biggest lie of my life, but of course, two days ago, I didn't know that.
I looked behind me and I saw the frisbee stuck on top of Mom's well-kept rose bush near the back door. I ran over, picked it up and threw it back to my brother. He quickly jumped up and caught it, giving me his innocent smile for not staying mad at him.
"What did you call me for?" I said while moving a little closer to join the game.
"I just wanted to ask if you would like to play frisbee with me?" Leo replied in his cute voice. I just nodded and waited for him to throw the frisbee. He threw it with a bit more force than I expected and it flew past me. I turned around and "Oof!" I screamed out as the frisbee hit me right in my sternum with full force and I stumbled backward.
