Kiro And Raven: Chosen Hero

Chapter Two

Chapter Two

Apr 25, 2023

School is a long maze that circles itself with three floors, the third being inaccessible to students. There are students all over the place chattering with friends, catching up with teachers, or even rushing to the bathroom giggling or crackling at one another.

I push through the crowd to the front part of the school. There's the principal's and counselor's office, with the nurses parallel to them. On the other side of the nurse's office, rests the largest library I have seen. It gets me excited just looking at it. The last school's library was too small to be called one. I push open the heavy doors entering the scent of fresh lemon, coffee, and books soaked into every crevice.

There's a large computer section to my left, students already there talking to one another in hushed voices opening web pages. To my right is the librarian's office with a hot pot of coffee being made for the morning and a librarian reading the newspaper while eating a  donut.

I head deep into the memorizing library fortress. Bookshelves are as tall as can be with a few step stools for those short like me to reach books up high. Students peruse the place, one girl carrying several books in her arms and taking them to the checkout counter with a gleam in her eyes.

I get to the very back, with a small area for people to read at tables. To one side is a couch with my three best friends sitting down and talking to one another in low voices.

Luna, Hazel, and Rebecca.

Luna sits at the end of the large green couch, a small pile of books next to her. These books are all about historical times, and various figures. The one she is currently reading is about United States presidents. She likes talking about history and wishes to become a historian for the Native American communities. The thing is, while she really is Native with a registered number and everything, she took doesn't look like her mother or father. As a kid, she would be bullied by other students because of this. She told me she looks like her great-great-grandmother who was, in fact, half-native.

Luna is white-skinned like soft spider silk. Her round face and cheeks are soft with feminine perfection. She does have high cheekbones, and her parent's large noses, but she has round bright baby sky-blue eyes that sparkle like stars. And the brightest blond hair I have ever seen as if the sun has given her threads of its purest sunlight. It's been braided back and decorated with a few important-looking bead threads. She's slimmer than other people, with a flat chest and waist. She prefers to dress in plain clothing, like her solid blue dress, with black high heels, and white stockings. It gives her a regal appearance, sitting quietly, with bright blue eyes devouring the pages. She glances up long enough to give me a small smile and slides a touch to the side to allow me to sit next to her, before going back to her reading.

On the other side bickering like usual are Hazel and Rebecca. Hazel is poking Rebecca's side, teasing her and Rebecca is fighting back pitifully with her hands giggling.

Hazel laughs, her wide smile spreading across her lovely thick face. She brushes back her long messy raven blue hair that shines against her dark olive skin tone, like bronze statues. She's the tallest girl I know in our grade, nearly six feet tall and possibly still growing. Her frame is that of a muscular monk, built to fight and last. Her short face is rounded by her cheekbones and facial structures. She's wearing a shirt a little too big and dirty with grease oils and stains. Her long blue pants already have a new hole. She turns to me, her wide hazel eyes glistening with delight. She grins widely at me, "Hey! You're finally here."

I nod plopping myself next to her, "What are you working on this time?" I point to her dirty shirt, "You should change before coming to school."

She just laughs, "Sorry, sorry. Dad and I were working on a robot for the next competition." She lifts her fist up punching the air, "We are going to one hundred percent win the competitions. No one can defeat us when we are on a roll."

I laugh, "Can we see it?"

"Sure, let me ask Daddy if I can have some people over. You know Dad loves you guys but Daddy has to have the entire house clean as can be before he lets anyone walk through the doors. And he yelled at me, and Dad yesterday because we forgot to change our shoes before walking into the house. Sheesh, he has no appreciation for our hard work does he."

Hazel is probably the smartest person in the room but lacks common sense or decency. There are times she forgets to eat for days on end because she's hyped up on some project. Without her daddy to help her and her father I'm sure they'd have starved long ago after building one of their mech robots or something. He's the stability of reality they need.

Hazel herself is in all AP classes, with extra classes in some private study schools, while doing robotics with her dad who is a scientist. Still, it astonishes me how she has time to play with us and be a kid.

Rebecca pokes Hazel's cheeks, "Your daddy always lets me in."

Hazel sticks her tongue out, "You're just a special case. And a traitor."

Rebecca giggles lifting up the wheels on her wheelchair and spinning before settling back down. Rebecca is pretty much the opposite of Hazel. Not just in looks but in mind.

Luna oozes grace and tranquility, Hazel a wildness of a beast. And Rebecca the cuteness of a princess. She's a perfect clean freak with immaculate looks perfected every morning in the mirror. Her bejeweled green eyes are enshrined with light blues and dark reds, her cheeks flushed and lips the sweetest nectar from the pinkiest flower. Her short curly red hair spins around her face, perfect curls I thought impossible before meeting her. She's wearing a long beautiful skirt layered in several different colors ruffling down like a rainbow. And she has a pale white undershirt and a light blue crop top with sleeves that stop just before her elbows as her lower arms are free to maneuver her wheelchair.

Hazel once more reaches over to ruthlessly attack Rebecca until she's laughing, "I give! I give! Stop it before I run over your foot!"

Hazel lifts her feet onto the couch, "Now you can't get them."

Rebecca hits her, "You brute." She flips her hair, "Luna, Kiro, I have an invite to give you both. But not you brute." She sticks her tongue out at Hazel, handing me and Luna a very fancy sweet envelope. "Inside will have the  time and place of 'MY' poem recital!" She beams, "Much more interesting than robots isn't it."

Luna smiles, "Yes, indeed."

I giggle, "I like watching the robots punch each other through." Hazel wraps my neck with her arm hooting in victory. "I got one!"

"But I'll go to the recital."

Rebecca smiles, "Thank you."

Rebecca has always enjoyed poetry and screenplays. We used to play Shakespeare for fun whenever Rebecca's turn came to pick what we played. She loved the drama of the stage and the beauty of poems. She plans on being a poet master or something. Though I personally have no idea how she'd achieve that goal.

We talk a bit longer about our summers, and what we did. Everyone was so busy we had maybe a week or two where we hung out and only for short periods of time.

Hazel suddenly lowers her voice, the excitement around her as she whispers, "Has any of you seen the news?"

A cold shiver went down my back. Of course, they'd have heard of it. I glance at the other girls and they nod slowly.

Rebecca frowns, "It's all over the poetry sites right now. Everyone is making some messed up poem about the Silver Trees."

Luna whispers, "I saw it in a dream."

Hazel, "Daddy was talking about it this morning!"

They glance at me.

I blush, "I saw it on the news channel...."

Hazel shakes in excitement, "It's all over, everyone taking selfies, but no one has successfully captured an image of the Silver Tree. But isn't it strange everyone is seeing the tree yet no one can get a photo?"

Rebecca frowns, "It's easy, one person pulls a prank, some crazy suddenly sees it spreads rumors and everyone wants to join in. That's how crazy things like this happen. It's nothing... I think..."

Hazel shakes her head, "Where're your imaginations? come on, I'm sure it's partially true!"

Luna has been watching me, and say's as sharply as ever, "You've seen it haven't you... my Aan..." I quickly turn to her. I should have expected her to notice. Luna is perhaps the most insightful person in the world. Her brilliant sharp blue eyes search my face frowning lightly. "Was it scary?"

Hazel and Rebecca quiet down breaming at me with questions. Hazel asks, "What does it look like!' Rebecca frowns disapprovingly at Hazel but looks at me with slight curiosity.

I sit there silently, taking a long deep breath before I tell them. "I was... looking at the mirror in my room when... Something caught my eye. It was misty at first. Then it took the shape of this haunting silver tree with shiny green leaves... There was something reaching out from the tree... I reach out to it... when it disappeared."

Hazel and Rebecca stare at me looking like they are about to screech in a mixture of awe and fear.

I look away, "I... I don't know if it's real guys... I might... I might be going c... c..." I bite my lips terrified to finish my sentence.

Luna takes a hand in her small ones. They are slender and sleek like little fairy hands, "My Aan... You are not crazy, nor are you imagining things." Her dark eyes tore deep into mine, reassuring my stuttering heart. "You are not crazy. I promise..." She of all people understands how I feel. We both have had our sanity questioned so many times by adults and doctors alike. Since we were young. Maybe that's why we cling to one another so hard when there was nothing else beneath our feet.

Hazel grips my shoulder, "It's got to be a spirit! Something trying to contact people!"

Rebecca rolls her eyes, "For a scientist you sure are superstitions." She flips her hair, "If there was such a thing as spirits would something have already tried to talk to us? Why not?"

Hazel smiles, "Maybe they couldn't until now! And they are sending us messages!" She looks around, "We have to go to the bathroom! We have to look for the Silver Tree!"

Rebecca grabs her, "No! First, we have something we must do before classes start!"

"What can be more important?"

"I want to know if we all have any classes that intersect one another!"

Even Luna laughs at that.

Rebecca turns a touch red, "It's very important!"

To please her, we all pull out our class sheets. I have Rebecca's first-period science. Everyone is at second-period PE. Luna third period English and Fourth History. Everyone during lunch. after Lunch, I have Algebra with Rebecca. Sadly I don't really have anything with Hazel, but lunch.

Rebecca smiles, "I have someone in at least one class!" She nods her head pleased with herself.

Hazel however is biting her lips, excitedly filling her, "Now can we go to the bathroom and check out the silver tree thing!"

Rebecca swipes at her, "Can't you think of anything else! For sure it's a hoax."

"But Kiro saw it, and I believe her!"

I blush, a mixture of embarrassment and pleasure going through me. Hazel believes me... That makes me undeniably happy. Hazel sees that and laughs, "Hey I don't think you're crazy either. those adults don't know anything about the supernatural." She pokes my cheek, "You and Luna are special. You see things we do not, and maybe one day." She turns to Rebecca smiling, "We should open our eyes and see what is possible." She grins, "Science is all about the unexplained, about exploration. How do you think we were able to invent light from darkness, soar the sky, and soon space? How can we do all these wondrous things without imagination and possibly a word from the other side." She grins, "Maybe they'll help me with my next robot. Give me the inspiration to see what was once impossible."

Rebecca just rolls her eyes.

After a bit of laughing. Hazel suddenly has a thought, "Next week is club sign-up. Kiro, you want to try swimming again?"

I shiver, shaking my head, "No... sorry."

Hazel shakes her head, "Don't apologize, I understand." She's back up, "Now that we finish all of Rebecca's school stuff, Let's go to the bathroom!"

Rebecca exclaimed, interrupting her, "There are more clubs other than swimming!" She lists a few, "Poetry and writing club, mathematics club, National Honor Society, even a robotics club." She turns to me, "We should all pick a club together so we can hang out even after school!" Her eyes are beaming.

Luna states, "I'm joining the history club. You guys should too. It will help with history class."

Rebecca smiles, "And poetry club! What's next? Um... should we join the robotics team just to be with Hazel?"

Hazel frowns, "Their weaklings with their robots. Plus I was banned after that incident." She smiles, "Not one teacher liked our robots fights, and since I started it." She shrugs, "I was banned." She grins, "Let's just walk around the fair together and pick them. Let's go to the bathroom!"

Hazel scowls, "No, let's enjoy our morning without any more talk about the Silver Tree!"

They both bicker for a while, as Luna and I just amusedly watch.

Suddenly Luna tilts her head upwards, her eyes growing distinct. Her soulful blue eyes widen and she catches her breath. I reach for her tapping her shoulder, "Luna?"

Luna blinks, mouthing a few words before turning to us. "My Aan... Everyone... I just had a vision..." Her voice grows cold, "disaster will strike at noon. A visitor from another roam will come and steal our sunlight. In five-month times, all our threads will snap...." She blinks slowly, her voice ragged. She turns to me holding me tight, "Something bad is going to happen!"

I pat her back, holding her tight.

Luna has the power of foresight. People think she is just crazy but those who actually pay attention to her know she is not. There was a time in second grade when Luna warned us not to go to our usual park. It was a good thing she told us, there was a massive earthquake that splits the earth where we usually played. Had we been there? We would have died. There was another time when she used her foresight to prevent us from getting stuck in a storm. Simple things like that, that somehow kept us out of danger. It only comes when there is a danger so... The three of us glance at one another. Another dangerous situation is going to happen in five months.

"What danger?"

She shakes her head, "I don't know this time... It came to me in a jumbled mess... words rather than sight. But it is bad, so very bad... Today something will start anew... and change our world entirely...."

Before we can figure anything out the bell rings for the first period.

I shake my head upset... We all slowly drifted away...

I take a long deep breath. Don't think about trees, blood, foresight... Think only about my teachers, peers, clubs, and classes. Think about normalcy.
