I don't know how many of you want to be writers nor do I know how many of you have ADHD.
The only thing I do know is that all this writing advice I see floating around the internet doesn't really work for me half the time. There's advice such as "Write every day to make it a habit" "Write what you enjoy reading" or "Reward yourself with something when you finish writing a book."
All of this advice doesn't work for me because my brain lacks dopamine and when dopamine doesn't hit anymore, it's really hard to continue. Making writing a habit? I don't remember what I own half the time if I don't see it in the open. If I forced myself to write every day, I'm very sure I'd grow to hate writing. If writing isn't my hobby anymore but it's treated like a job then I'll be miserable. I prefer writing on the more fantastical and magical side too. The largest genre I read next to fantasy? I read a lot of contemporary. I honestly have a hard time writing it compared to fantasy. Fantasy I can worldbuild and have endless ideas that build upon each other while contemporary I got it down pact in the beginning and continuing to write it and not have it be expanded in new ways that I don't expect is pretty low. Then there's rewarding yourself. Why not have a reward now? I have hyperfixations, which means what I want now will be irrelevant in like 4 months so I want to have the thing that makes me happy right now.
Tangent aside, writing looks so much different for me. I can write thousands of words for a project one day and the next day I can't write at all. I stare at the screen and hope something magically appears. Other neurodivergent people call it executive dysfunction. For neurotypical people, it's called writer's block. I call it a living hell and I'm very sure someone is sadistically laughing somewhere.
Because I'm so used to writing for following the dopamine, it means I really like starting new projects. Starting new projects is really fun. What's really not fun is maintaining writing so many projects.
I'm currently writing four books right now. Why do I do this to myself? I don't know. Again, someone somewhere is laughing at my demise. Two of the books I'm writing are being uploaded online currently and two offline. The two, as some of you may be aware of already, are "Slow and Speedy Win the Fight" and "Write Off". The other two all of you definitely don't know about just yet. I'm working on a middle grade series at the moment as well as a new adult scifi/fantasy story involving a romance between a time traveller and a seer. The latter one you might see later in the year while the middle grade series I have no clue if I'll ever release it online. I don't see a lot of space for it online but that's for another entry.
Even the genres I write are a little all over the place because my brain like new and shiny fun things.
What really helps me write is finding a song that scratches my brain just right, putting it on loop with headphones on, and going to write as much as I can when I can. If I develop new hyperfixations, I try and relate them back to existing hobbies. I was really into stickers and collecting and buying them for a few months so I bought journals to write story ideas and story notes so I could decorate them with stickers. You have to figure out what works out for you and what will encourage you as opposed to trying to follow every single piece of advice that comes your way as gospel. Writing is subjective and reading is subjective, which means the writing process will look different for everyone.
