Bacteria have different tastes than we do in drink choices…
If both glucose and lactose are in the environment, E. coli cells will first consume glucose and then lactose (as glucose represses the genes to consume lactose).
Minimal media is useful for scientist wanting to limit bacterial cultures, or for bacteria looking to go on a diet.
And finally, Proteus cells can consume urea which is why it likes colonizing the urinary tract, much to our chagrin…
