Nexus Convergence

Chapter 3: Flames and Shadows - The Birth of a Mage

Chapter 3: Flames and Shadows - The Birth of a Mage

May 08, 2023

Samara trudged through the muddy forest path, her boots squelching with each step. The dense canopy above filtered the sunlight, casting eerie shadows on the underbrush. In this world of Nexus, where magic and technology were intertwined, she realized very quickly that even the smallest accomplishment was an uphill battle.

"Okay, Samara," she muttered to herself, scanning her surroundings for any sign of trouble. "You've got this. Just keep moving forward."

As she continued along the path, Samara's senses were heightened. She could hear the rustling of leaves and the snap of twigs underfoot, but there was something else, something ominous that made her hair stand on end. She couldn't quite put her finger on what it was, but it was definitely there.

Suddenly, she heard a low growl coming from the bushes to her right. She froze, her heart pounding in her chest as she reached for the sword that she had discovered was in her inventory via the Nexus interface. A giant wolf-like creature emerged from the foliage, its eyes glowing with an otherworldly light.

Samara raised her sword, ready to defend herself, but the wolf charged at her before she could even move. She tried to roll out of the way, but the wolf's massive paw sent her tumbling backward to the ground. In the corner of her eye, she saw her health meter decrease. "Damnit, if I don't figure this out I'll actually die."

She scrambled to her feet and raised her sword again, but the wolf was too quick. It lunged at her once more, its teeth bared and ready to strike. Samara ducked to the side, narrowly avoiding the beast's attack. She swung her sword and felt it connect with the wolf's hide, but it didn't seem to have much effect.

The wolf howled, and suddenly more of its kind appeared from behind the trees. Samara was surrounded, and she knew that her chances of survival were practically zero. She gritted her teeth and prepared for the worst, ready to fight until her last breath.

But just as the wolves were about to pounce, a tower of fire shot down from the sky, striking the ground between Samara and the beasts. The wolves yelped in fear and scattered, and Samara looked up to see a figure in black robes stepping out of the trees.

"Who are you?" Samara demanded her sword still at the ready.

The figure said nothing, instead, flames leaped from its body as the figure pointed its arm at the wolves. A blast of fire shot out, engulfing the wolves in a fiery blaze. Samara watched in amazement as the wolves writhed and howled in pain. When the flames dissipated, the wolves lay motionless on the ground.

The figure turned to Samara, revealing her face. She had sharp, angular features and piercing green eyes that seemed to glow with an inner light. But what stood out was her hair. It was like a fire, red and glowing.

"I am Kyra," she said, her voice deep and raspy. "I am a mage, and I have been watching you."

Samara lowered her sword, still in shock from what she had just witnessed. "Thank you. My name is Samara," she said, finally finding her voice. "Those wolves would have killed me and I'm grateful for you saving me....but, you kind of jumped in a bit late, don't you think?"

Kyra nodded. "You are new to Nexus, are you not? I can sense it in your aura."

Samara hesitated but saw no harm in admitting it. "Yes, I am. I'm still trying to figure this place out."

Kyra smiled. "I can help you if you're willing. But first, let's get out of this forest. It's not safe here."

Samara nodded, grateful for the offer but weary that Kyra ignored the fact she almost let her die. "Well, I'm headed to Emberwood village, do you know where that is?"

"I do," Kyra replied as she reached down to pick something up from the burnt bodies of the wolves. "I'm actually headed there myself."

"Sounds good, I'll be in your care," Samara said as she bowed.

Kyra chuckled again before finishing up with the bodies of the wolves. "You don't have to bow to me Samara, only to royalty. And I am not that," Kyra noted with a hint of malicious in her tone.

"Noted," Samara remarked as she stood back up. "Well still, I'm in your care." Samara had no idea if she was making the right decision, but, regardless, what did she have to lose? She followed Kyra out of the forest, watching as the mage conjured up a small flame to light the way. As they walked, Kyra explained the basics of magic.

"Magic is the manipulation of natural energy," she said. "It comes from the elemental powers of nature, and it can be used to both help and harm. Most mages in Mystica are born with a natural affinity for it." Kyra continued to explain the various types of magic that existed in Nexus - elemental magic, divination magic, enchantment magic, and healing magic - as well as the different schools of thought within each type.

"Elemental magic is the most common form of magic, and it is typically split into four categories - air, earth, fire, and water. Each element has its own unique properties which can be manipulated to create powerful spells.

Samara listened intently, absorbing every word. While scared, she realized she was living in a fantasy world just like the characters in web novels she frequently read on Earth. She shook the thought out of her head and tuned back into what Kyra was saying.

"Divination magic allows a mage to see into the future or read someone's thoughts and intentions by tapping into the power of divinity. Enchantment magic is used to bind objects together or control living beings while healing magic is used to restore health and vitality.

Kyra then explained that while some mages specialized in specific fields of magic, others were able to use a combination of different types. "Magic is like a toolbox. While everyone has the ability to learn magic, there are levels to a mage's power that are determined at birth, but, are also limited by the mage's imagination. Those with strong magical abilities have a greater range of spells they can cast, while those with weaker magic have more limited access to certain types of spells."

"Is there a way for weaker mages to be able to grow their abilities?"

"Is there a way for weaker mages to be able to grow their abilities?"

"There are certain artifacts scattered across Nexus that could amplify a mage's power, but they are heavily guarded by powerful forces so obtaining them was no easy task."

I nodded at the information as she continued on.

Kyra motioned for Samara to follow her off the path and into a clearing. As they stepped out of the trees, Samara marveled at what she saw before her. In the middle of an open field was a ring of stones with a single flame in its center. Kyra explained that this was the training ground of Emberwood village and where they would practice her first lesson in magic - learning how to use elemental magic.

"I've done enough talking...let's see what you got."

Samara took a deep breath and stepped into the ring of stones, her heart racing with excitement and nerves. She closed her eyes and tried to focus on the elements around her, feeling the energy pulsing through the air.

"Okay, what do I do now?" Samara asked, opening her eyes to see Kyra watching her with a smirk.

"I want you to try to manipulate the flame in the center of the ring," Kyra said. "See if you can make it grow or shrink."

Samara nodded and took a step forward, extending her hand toward the flame. She closed her eyes again and focused all of her energy on the flame, trying to will it to grow. At first, nothing happened, but then she felt a tingling sensation in her fingers.

Suddenly, the flame began to flicker and grow, its light brightening and intensifying. Samara opened her eyes and saw that the flame had doubled in size, its heat now radiating out toward her.

"Good job," Kyra said with a nod of approval. "Now, try to make it shrink back down."

Samara took a deep breath and focused again, trying to will the flame to go back to its original size. She concentrated, feeling the energy swirling around her, and after a few moments, the flame began to dwindle. It shrank back down to its original size, and then even smaller until it was just a tiny flicker of light.

"Excellent," Kyra said. "You have a natural talent for elemental magic, especially fire. With practice, you could become very powerful."

Samara beamed with pride, feeling a sense of accomplishment.

"Thank you," Samara said, bowing again to Kyra.

"What did I say about the bowing," Kyra snapped as she put a hand over her head.

"Sorry," I replied with a smirk on my face.

Clasping her hands together, Kyra twirled her hand growing the fire in size. "Now, let's try something more challenging. I want you to create a gust of wind that blows the flame out."

Samara nodded, feeling determined to prove herself. She extended her hand once again, focusing all of her energy on the flame. Suddenly, a gust of wind materialized, whipping around the ring. The flame flickered and then went out briefly before roaring back to life.

Kyra's eyes widened in surprise. "Impressive," she said with a smirk. "You're a natural at this. Are you interested in seeing what more you can do?"

I nodded my head in agreement amazed at my progress.

"Wonderful. Let's try something new," Kyra said with a sparkle in her eye. "I want you to see if you can manipulate water and earth next." She motioned for me to stand back as she created a pool of water and then manipulated the earth beneath it, shaping it into various forms. "See if you can do the same," she said, gesturing for me to give it a try.

Feeling excited and more confident than ever before, I stepped forward and closed my eyes again. After a few moments of intense concentration, I felt my fingers tingling with energy again. I opened my eyes and watched as the water began to ripple and swirl in response to my manipulation while the earth shifted, forming different shapes and structures at my command.

When I was finished, Kyra smiled at me in approval. "You continue to surprise me," she said with admiration in her voice. "It seems like elemental magic comes naturally to you, Samara. With each passing day, your skills will continue to grow, and you'll become an even more powerful mage."

Samara smiled, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. She couldn't believe that just a few hours ago, she was lost in the woods with no idea of what to do. Now, she was standing in a clearing, manipulating the elements around her.

"Thank you, Kyra," Samara said, bowing in gratitude.

"Don't mention it," Kyra said with a wave of her hand. "This is just the beginning of your training. There's still so much more for you to learn."

Samara nodded, feeling excited about her progress and the decision to follow Kyra. As the two of them continued to practice, Samara realized that the possibilities were endless, and she was excited to see what she could achieve with her newfound power. She was ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead and become the best mage she could be.
