Aquila: Same here! It was a great combination of characters and really fun storytelling. The golf mafia was delightful.
K: They really are doing a Romeo and Juliet thing with golf...and a golf mafia.
A: And it’s working really well. Eve and Aoi have some real chemistry together. You can cut the romantic tension between them with a knife.
K: The tournament arcs are really well handled too. Not too long, not too short, character development actually happening in them...
A: ...and the golf! I had no idea that Cap’s favourite sport was this exciting! Kasumi, we need to go to a golf course and play some golf.
K: Sure! I’ve never tried it, but it looks like it could be fun.
A: I’m going to hit so many blue bullets...
K: Um, Aquila...
A: Oh! And the rainbow shot! If I practice enough, I can make a rainbow with my swing, right?
K: Aquila...I hate to tell you this, but...
A: Yes?
K: Real golf doesn’t have those things.
A: Really?
K: I’m afraid so. They’re visual conceits to show how special the shots are.
A: But the other characters can see them.
K: That’s also a conceit for telling the story.
A: So when you hit a ball in real golf...
K: ...it just goes up into the air and comes down again, yes.
A: Oh.
K: I’m sorry, I know it’s disappointing.
A: Well, of course it’s disappointing...golf is so much more interesting with bullets and rainbows! Why, it’s the Platonic ideal of golf!
K: We can still go if you want to.
A: We absolutely should.
K: And, I’m sure it will be fun.
A: Of course it will. After all, if real golf doesn’t live up to the ideal, it’s our responsibility to make it happen!
K: Okay. I’ll see about finding us a golf pro, and...wait, what?
A: I mean, it shouldn’t be too hard. We’d just need a drill and little rockets with coloured smoke.
K: Um...
A: Oh yes, and contact triggers! After all, we don’t want the rockets firing before the golf ball is hit.
K: I’m seeing a lot of problems with this plan.
A: Well, we’d need a lot of little rockets, and probably more than one drill bit, but we could do it in a couple of nights. A week, tops. And think how surprised and delighted the golfers will be when they hit their balls and watch the smoke trails!
K: I think they’re more likely to be terrified. Also, I’m pretty sure the balls would overshoot the greens...and be travelling fast enough to explode on impact.
A: So we put a layer of padding around each golf ball and start with the golfers who aren’t very good. You need to be logical about this, Kasumi – think of how happy they’ll be now that they’re firing blue bullets and actually reaching the greens.
K: Yeah...we’re not doing this.
A: But, the golfers! They’ve never experienced the Platonic ideal of golf – think of what they’re missing!
K: We’re still not doing this. We are not surprising golfers – and whoever lives around the golf course – with rocket propelled golf ball grenades.
A: But they’d be so happy with us!
K: They really wouldn’t. Who’s your candidate for best girl?
A: Eve’s putter.
K: You’re giving that to a golf club?
A: It doesn’t get nearly as much screen time as the other clubs, and it doesn’t get to hit as many bullets. It deserves a morale boost!
K: Right, to sum up, we liked Birdy Wing, and, um, golf is more exciting with rockets...
A: Exactly! And all we’d need to do is get to the nearest golf course and–

NOTE: This series is now on hiatus as Aquila and Kasumi go on their new adventure.
Aquila is a former god of destruction with light blue hair, along with a penchant for military coats and popped collars, who waged a personal war against the world of her creator. Kasumi is her creator, who Aquila saved through a miracle and is now Aquila’s partner in all things. Now that Aquila has atoned for her actions, she and Kasumi are touring the story worlds with their friends...while taking a bit of time to watch some TV and movies.
Come join Aquila and Kasumi on the couch for a nice chill chat as they talk about the latest thing they’ve sat down and enjoyed.
WARNING: There will be spoilers.
New episodes every other Saturday.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: All of the media Aquila and Kasumi review here I consider to be good and worth watching. I do not like the current mean-spiritedness that pervades pop culture discourse, and as such I never want to use these characters to tear down or encourage hate watching a show. It’s meant to be good natured fun, and that’s all there is to it.
