River shook his head, rolling his eyes at me.
‘You truly are a moron,’ he sighed as he shuffled around a bit to get comfortable. The toffee-colored wolf would not let me stop him from getting a nap in, leaving me to deal with my blunder by myself.
What else is new?
Standing in the silence, I watched as James and Kash exchanged looks. I sighed heavily, just annoyed now that I did something so dumb. Maybe I did have preggo brain. I fixed my shirt, pulling it down to cover my secret once more.
“Remy your stomach…”James started but couldn’t finish his sentence.
“You're not–not–-no—” Kash mumbled, his mind in a free fall. My head hung low. A fresh wave of sadness came over me as I realized that this was how I was going to tell my best friends about my little surprise. Wasn’t like I was planning a baby reveal party or anything, but I wanted it to be on happier terms. Not like this.
“So, I guess I’d better tell you guys now. I was waiting until I was further along, but I’m… pregnant. Surprise!” Lackluster in my delivery, I didn’t even look up to meet their gazes. I mean this was all so weird to even say. I was a guy, no less, and pregnant. This was not a predicament I ever thought I’d find myself in. If Kash told me this, I probably would’ve flipped out on him.
With my head still low, my curls drooped down to cover my watery eyes. I was getting emotional again, the fear of rejection driving me to become self-conscious. I was overthinking everything, and it showed through my silence.
What if they stop talking to me?
Assuming the worst, I failed to anticipate the rush of excitement that met me.
“You’re pregnant?!” James squealed aloud. My eyes met his bubbly expression, happiness plastered across his face. “O. M G., Do you know what this means?” He jumped up and down, giddily shaking my arm.
“What does it mean?” I was just surprised to be greeted by such a cheerful demeanor. It wasn’t like how the council took the news. This was completely different.
“I’m gonna be an uncle! Oh, I’m so happy for you, Remy!” James locked me into an enormous bear hug.
“I thought something was strange. Bro, you were out-eating me tonight. You stuffed your face so much, I thought you were trying to race me or something.” Kash laughed as he came over to hug me as well. “Turns out you were eating for two!” My friends were over the moon, gushing at my startling news. And for once, I was speechless.
It didn’t matter if I was pregnant or not. My friends were going to be by my side, no matter what, and I was stupid to ever doubt them.
A simple “thanks” was all I could get out before the tears fell.
“Wow Remy, who knew you could be such a baby.” Kash’s jokes always got me out of my funk.
James immediately let go of me, only to rub his hand on my belly. Before now, only the Alphas had done such an intimate thing. Blush painted my cheeks red. James didn’t seem to mind, giggling as he continued his sweet gesture. “How far along are you? Do you know what you're having? Is it a boy? I bet it’s a girl!”
I chuckled as I pushed my curls out of my face. “I’m only two months along, but it’s too soon to know,” I informed him. “Besides, I don't really care what I’m having, as long as they’re healthy.”
“They?” Kash sputtered out. His eyes widened at part two of my secret.
“Oops, I wasn’t supposed to say that.” I hit myself in the forehead for being such a big mouth. No need to worry about the council. I needed a gag order for myself if I kept talking at this rate.
“Remy, no way… this is just crazy… you're having twins?” Kash just about pulled his hair out, running his hands through his light auburn hair. Before he could step off the edge of his absurdity, I pulled him back in.
“It’s not like I decided this.” I reminded him. “Actually, I just found out today.” I pulled the photo of the sonogram from my pocket to show them.
“This is so… cool!” Kash beamed. “I’m so happy for you, Remy.” The two tried to hug me some more and I, unfortunately, could not defeat them. Not that I would admit it, but they turned everything around for me, my day ending on a pleasant note.
“Oh,” Kash gasped. “I bet the Alphas are excited.”
“Tell me about it,” I huffed. “They won’t leave me alone for a second.”
‘Well, except for tonight,’ River scoffed. He reminded me of the looming elephant in the room.
“Do you know whose it is?” James was being nosy as he tried to lift my shirt to get another peek of my belly.
“Actually, I don’t,” I swatted his hand away, embarrassed to be flooded with such personal questions.
“How come?” The boy pushed me to an uncomfortable place, one where I didn’t want to discuss such graphic details with a minor—let alone explain what I do with his brother and Theo on a daily basis. I didn’t know what James knew about the world, and I wanted to keep it that way.
“Who cares? All I know is I’m gonna be the godparent,” Kash proudly declared.
“What? Not fair, I wanna be a godparent too,” James whined.
“Why? You're already an uncle. You can’t be both? Now that’s not fair.”
A warm smile danced across my face, watching these two goofballs argue with each other just to be given a silly title. My hand naturally came to my belly, my pups were going to be surrounded by many people who cared for them. More than what I was given in life. A family to call their own.
“Alright, I get it. You guys both can be godparents. Quiet down, you buttheads, or you’ll wake my moms up.” It was time we left the room. James was bouncing off the walls. His loud footsteps were sure to awaken someone by now.
“Yay!” James shouted. He boyishly stuck his tongue out at Kash. The two jabbed at each other as they left the room.
I lingered for a bit, grabbing all the pillows off my bed before I joined them downstairs in the living room.
Kash had rearranged all of the couch pillows on the floor, using the sofa cushions to make the walls. James stole the chairs from the kitchen nook, turning the chairs to face each other to expand the fort. All the while, they continued to bicker over who would now get to name my kids.
“We have to give them matching names, maybe like Brett and Rhett or Emma and Gemma,” James listed off.
“Or we could name one of them Kash?” My best friend just had to put it out there.
Names were just another thing on the growing list of items the Alphas and I needed to address. I honestly haven’t given much thought to it, hoping to wait until I gave birth safely before I named the pups.
“Nonsense, we have to give them matching names,” James said. He strung a set of Christmas lights inside the fort, the low lighting perfect for the cute chill spot.
Shaking my head, I wasn’t about to get into this stupid argument. A name was an important step in a child’s life, and I wanted to make that decision with my mates.
“How about this, we name them Kash and James? Huh? I mean, it only makes sense since we’re gonna be the godparents.” Kash continued to push his hidden agenda.
“Good point, I like that. Has a nice ring to it.” James smiled, finally caving to Kash’s stupid idea.
“Yeah, that’s a no for me, dawg. I ain’t naming my kids after you two.” I sighed. This was going nowhere.
“Fine, maybe not Kash and James, but maybe Kash and Keisha. Now that works.” Kash draped the last comforter over the sofa, finishing the roof for our fort.
“Still a no.” I said, rolling my eyes once more. His incessant banter was annoying, but I didn’t mind it so much. We all filed into the fort, turning on the TV to binge a whole new season of Demon Slayer. Simple and easy, a quiet night to end such a chaotic day. My eyes peered towards the window, staring into the darkness. Just like my mind, unseen problems were probably waiting for their time to strike.
