An AB refers to "able-bodied seaman," which is a rank in the merchant marines (an occupation in which people work on commercial ships). ABs usually operate winches, cranes, hatches, and cargo booms as well as handle lines and wheel the ship under the direction of a mate, who specializes in navigation, cargo operations, and ship-handling. ABs are one rank above OS ("ordinary seaman").
