I
mindlessly stare at the window. For someone who used to enjoy
birthdays, this time I feel like its a burden and I'd rather just
forget about it. I feel my phone vibrate and an email pop up
notification appears on my phone. Great,
I think, my flight is confirmed. I have no choice but to go back home
for my birthday party. I look at the piles of files on my desk that I
barely even looked into. I feel irritated and annoyed at the same
time though I know it's all in my head. I hear a soft knock on the
door, “
Come in Eva, what is it?”
I try to sound gentle but my annoyance is clearly visible from the
way she hesitates before speaking.
“I just wanted to inform you that the final selection for the
interviews is set for next week for the new IT position sir.” I
sigh and run my hands through my hair.
“Sadly, I won't take part in the hiring this time as I will be
going back home for a week. Please inform Hanna,John and Christine to
do the vetting and decide who to hire. I trust their judgment and
yours too Eva” I
try to give a smile but instead I think I spook her. Why do I even
bother to be social? Seems like the maker forgot to bless me with the
skills in that compartment. I can feel a headache coming. “Would
that be all Eva?” I
patiently ask. “Yes
sir, thank you for your trust, we won't let you down. Have a safe
trip to Korea from all of us here.” She
heads to the door. “You
are welcome and for the next week , you can all get off work earlier
if you wish. I suppose there's not much to do for the few days
ahead.”
She gives her thanks and leave me to my thoughts in my office. Eva has been working for me for the past 6 years now, even though timid and gentle she is quite a manager and full of potential. She is my right hand and I trust her to run the company and assume my position when I am not around. I make a mental note to bring some gifts to all the employees from my trip.
“You owe me bud for babysitting Peachy and Piper. So when are you leaving?” I see a text from Kaylah. “Can't wait to get rid of me huh? Anyway, my flight is at 5 in the morning , so I have to leave around 3 am and then spend almost 12 hours on the plane- Splendid!” I send an emoji with rolling eyes. She replies quicker than I expected. “Sucks to be you! Ha ha ha, cheer up though, I bet your mum has found a nice wealthy Korean model to introduce to you. Hehehe wink wink” I sigh loudly, this is another reason I am not looking forward to going home. My parents have been bugging me for awhile now on settling down and it's starting to get in my nerves now. I get their frustrations, but honestly it's exhausting for me to have to explain to them that I just haven't found the right woman or better yet I don't believe she even exists at all. I figure since my mind is all over today, I might as well just go home and start packing and spend time with my two favorite girls. I bid everyone goodbye and just drive off.
