“Wait, wait, wait, you're done already?” He looked at me with a surprised face, and then took a long gulp from his mug.
“Yeah,” I answered quickly with a proud smile “I learned a little bit about how to gather the wind in my hand, and how to use the spell torch!”
Jack spit out the booze he was drinking and slammed the mug down on the table, drawing the attention from the other people inside the inn. “So, ya want to tell me that ya learned one spell each from two different elements? He then let out a big, hearty laugh and almost fell from his chair. “I knew that you were something special, boy! Having two elements and learning two spells in half a day’s time, ya have to be some kind of genius!”
He stood up and threw some bronze coins on the table. “Let’s go to Tony right now! After he hears this, he has to acknowledge your talent! But don’t get too cocky now. This is only the beginning.” He slammed the door open, which startled the other people, and then left.
I followed him as quickly as I could while acknowledging what he said. It was far too early for me to get too overconfident in my abilities. Nonetheless, I was still proud of myself for being able to learn these two spells so quickly.
We followed the main muddy road towards the biggest building inside this small village. It was bigger than the Guildhall and instead of being built out of wood, like the other buildings, they used massive white stone bricks. It looked like it didn’t belong here.
As we entered the building, we found two men arguing inside the corridor. One of them was Tony who was as calm and collected as always, while the other one desperately flailed with his arms, trying to explain something to him.
“I tell you, mister Winter! You've got it all wrong!” He put his hand to his chest, screaming towards Tony. “We would never do something like this! Please believe me!”
Tony took out a handkerchief to wipe away the spit from his face. “And I tell you, mayor, It’s only a speculation. I will look deeper into this matter, but the evidence I have found so far is not in your favor.”
The mayor’s desperate expression turned to anger in an instant, and I thought that he was going to attack Tony. But he managed to collect himself again with a deep breath and turned his back toward him. “Do as you like.” He then vanished inside a room at the end of the corridor.
Tony let out a big sigh and shook his head. “What an idiot.” He then turned around and noticed us. “Ah, Jack and Eldric. What brings you two here? Like I said this morning, I’m only going to acknowledge him when he learned a spell or two.”
Jack crossed his arms and stepped towards Tony. “Then be amazed my friend! Then this boy has not only learned one spell, nah! He learned two spells, one each with a different Element!”
Tony looked at me with skeptical eyes. “You want to tell me that this Child is a dual elemental, and has already a grasp on magic? Well, I don’t know I what you are telling is the truth, but I will have to see it with my own eyes first before I can believe you. Step outside Eldric and show me what you have learned in the past 12 hours.”
He walked toward the end of the corridor, and slowly opened a door, revealing a big beautiful garden behind it. He stepped through it and I quickly followed him with Jack walking right behind me.
The Garden was spacious, with many beautiful flowers in different shapes and colors. In the middle of the garden was an arena surrounded by trees, where Tony and I now stood.
Pushing his glasses up, Tony stood in front of me. “Now, show me. What exactly did you learn?”
Nervousness crept up on me. My arms and legs were shaking and I took a deep breath. I needed to fully concentrate in order to cast these two spells. First, I tried torch. I closed my eyes and stretched my arm out a little bit, with my index finger pointing upwards, then I began guiding the mana towards the tip of my finger. Slowly but steadily, I gathered enough mana inside the tip of my finger and then Imagined the small flickering flame gently burning on top of it. Now that I had the clear Image of the flame, the only thing I needed to do now was to speak the Incarnation out loud. But it took not long before a realization struck me. I had forgotten the Incarnation! I thought hard and long but I still couldn’t remember the Incarnation. I must have been so excited that I had comepletly forgotten it. Ready to give up, I opened my eyes only to to see tony clapping. Confused, I looked at my hand, and contrary to what I expected, I saw a Flame, flickering on top of my index finger, shining brighter than the first time I had cast it.
“Impressive. Jack really did not lie when he said that you have talent. Even if it’s just a beginner spell like torch, it is still impressive that you managed to silently cast it so quickly.”
Jack gave me a thumbs up and looked as proud as if he were the one who had taught me that.
I let the flame disappear and screamed out of joy internally.
I did it! I cast the spell without the need for an incarnation! I’m amazing!
“I can see it on your face. Don’t get too smug now. Keep concentrating and show me your second spell.” Tony demanded.
While slightly embarrassed, I closed my eyes again and began to channel my mana again. This time, instead of creating a slight breeze inside my palm, I wanted to try coating my whole fist in wind magic. Balling my fist, I concentrated all my mana on it. I felt how the wind was gathering around my fist and when I opened my eyes again, I saw it. Much easier then the torch spell, I managed to coat my whole fist in wind magic on my first try. It made me really happy, but after a few seconds, my head began to feel heavy. It seemd that I was only able to keep it up for a short time before a wave of exhaustion hit me and the wind dissipated. While short of breath, I went down to one knee. I was not expecting to consume so much mana for such a simple thing.
Tony clapped again and walked towards me. “Now I’m really impressed. Even though you lack the mana capacity for it, you still managed to coat your whole fist in wind magic.” Putting a hand on my shoulder he told me. “I have decided. I acknowledge your talent and I will train you.” He then looked at Jack. “But you have to pay for it.”
Jack just shrugged. “No worries. That was my plan, to begin with.”
Joy overcame me and I fell down on my butt while laughing. The exhaustion didn’t really matter anymore, I was just glad that I found a place to stay inside this new mysterious world.
"Thank you very much!" I said with a smile. "I will be in your care."
Tony crouched down to look me in the eye. “ No need to thank me. But before I can start planning your training. I need to know what type of mage you are. Are you an enchanter or a caster?”
Not knowing what Tony wanted from me, I just let out an exhausted, “What?”
