It was Friday and we were left with no more excuses...

It was finally time to go to the LAB. 

We went up the hill and crawled through the broken glass window.

It was quiet.

Only one sound. Only trash getting crushed under our feet echoed on the spacey walls and furniture.

We walked in our silent company,

“You know you’re very smart, I mean if not you wouldn’t cook so well,’’  I said with the failed attempt to trying to stop the awkward atmosphere from persisting.

When Alferd was about to respond…

There was a loud SCREECHING coming from the nearby room…

We entered… 

No one was there…

“Help!” 

I turned around and stretched my neck to face the ceiling.

 There he was, hanging from the silk of a GIANT spider!

It didn’t help that he had arachnophobia nor that the monstrous mutant was double his size. 

Apart from that, I didn’t hesitate. 

In the fear of it sucking every last drop of his blood. I picked up a laser from the nearby table. Don’t step on the WEB I said on and on in my head. 

I untangled Alferd and brought him home. 

“Melisa you… you stole my role! Now you were the cool knight in shining armour! Not that I mind or anything,’’ Alferd pouted with little to no seriousness in his voice . 

“OK then, I'll remember to call you Sir. Knight Alferd of Nowhere.’’

‘'Alright, then I shall call you Beautiful Princess Melisa the first of Nowhere.’’ Seconds after we both burst into laughter. And I blushed as he called me beautiful.

I remembered something funny,

When I was in the lab, I snuck a book about how to mutate mice to make them pink or blue. The book asked “how would you like to have pink hair!?” I found that quite amusing.

We were going back to the LAB this time expecting the unexpected…

Entered the room with a sign saying  ‘ DNA'. We looked around in every corner until we found a ball of fluff on the floor trembling…

“TAFFY!’’ We shouted in unison  turning as pink as the pup in front of us. It was a puppy with pink fur which did nothing less than remind both of us of when Alferd had made a delicious strawberry-flavoured ROSE PINK taffy for a birthday of mine, that was apparently when I should have turned 14 but I doubt that as only 6 months later he gave me a gift for my 15th birthday. The puppy looked as if it wanted me to pick him up and bring him home. The silky Cavalier King Charle’s spaniel wasn’t fond of being alone.

Alferd had a moment of thought as to what to do with the pup and the answer became clear from its likely infected ears and boney, fragile body, he was just like us.

A tool.

‘’Poor pup I’m sure you didn’t like being an experiment either."

‘’But at least I can hold you now!’’ Alferd commented as he was allergic to dogs but Taffy’s mutations had made him extremely hypoallergenic. Taffy new we were trustworthy. We shared our constellation of freckles. The same artificial smell…

We let him follow us and brought him home with great joy.
