For Jin, it was another early morning at his penthouse. The modern tower stood with other similar towers at the edge of the city. A faint glow from the setting moon peeked through the curtains to illuminate the dark bedroom. He calmly gets out of bed and pulls apart the curtains. Outside his window, several monorails were weaving through the city far below like dozens of snakes. The lights of the towers around him were still off. When he looked up, the dark sky was brightening and there was a plane descending into the city.
After pulling the curtains together, Jin walks to the doorway and it brightens dimly to reveal a short straight hallway. To his left was a faintly lit room, and to the right was a painting. Its frame was made of elegant bronze which was engraved with spiral patterns, but the picture was rustic which showed a bustling marketplace with a large temple in the back reaching for the blue sky. Along the halls to his left, there were doors with scenes of animals carved into them. He walks to the closest left door as the hallway brightens to a warm glow. Engraved on it, a sloth hangs off a tree branch and the edges were decorated with leaves.
He enters a large white washroom which had a small pool, a sink, and a toilet. Buttons and panels were sprawled all over the washroom fixtures and there was a cabinet with a mirror above the sink. A full body mirror was bolted to the wall near the sink. The pool was fairly small but deep enough to submerge in. A basket of shampoo and bar soap was next to the pool in a small groove on the floor. After tapping the sink faucet, water flows out and two gauges on the side light up. He splashes some water onto his face and brushes his teeth.
After cleaning himself up, he leaves the washroom and heads back to his bedroom. The glow from the hallway revealed more of his room as he entered. It was fairly large and well kept, but sparse of decoration which could bring a personal touch for himself. Despite this, the furnishing he did possess were elaborate: a king size mahogany bed with the carving of a farmer's field on its frame, a large armoire with drawers on both sides of a massive central double door, and a finely carved mahogany desk with drawers of differing sizes on its right side. Inside the armoire's double doors, there were many identical tan suits hanging at the top, and many identical accessories in a narrow drawer that split the space in half. On top of it, there was a crystal ornament shaped like a T with a golden string resting on a cushion. He quickly gets dressed and attaches the ornament to his belt.
Jin makes his way through the hallway towards the large room which had lighten up. In one part of the room, there was a long coffee table between two luxurious beige couches. A few steps to the side was an extra large television mounted to the wall. The front door was plain with a polished crystal-like door handle. Opposite to it was a massive window showing the patchwork city outside. Next to his window was the dining area which had a long mahogany table with several matching tall chairs tucked in. In the corner, his kitchen was cluttered with pots and pans hanging on hooks, cabinets of silverware and plates, several kitchen appliances, and marble tabletop counters. He walked over and quickly made himself a meal.
Once he finished eating and cleaning, he leaves his room. He walks down the hallway of doors on a polished black-green floor. Soon, he stood in front of two pale silver doors engraved with a lion head. A key is inserted into a panel and twisted clockwise. The doors open to a simple box with handrails. He takes the key and enters inside. The key is inserted into a keyhole in the elevator and twisted counterclockwise. The elevator door closes and takes him down to the parking lot without stopping on a floor. In front of him stood a black pickup truck with extra large wheels. The dark interior lacked any sort of decorations but there was a thick bundle of rolled cloth in the backseat.
He enters inside and drove up many ramps to exit the parking lot. He was met with a dotted line of gardens with birch trees planted along the middle, dividing the wide road into two. He turned right and drove down the nearly empty road, passing by a transit bus and a jogger.
Soon he arrives at a pair of ramps which were labelled “entrance 14” and “exit 14”. He makes a turn into the entrance and enters a spiral ramp which he left at the first opportunity. As soon as the truck exits, it accelerates through a long tunnel. It was one massive tube with large grooves carved into the ceiling similar to a heat sink. Between the grooves were countless yellowish-orange lights that shined down on the roads which became a blur. There were two sets of five lanes which were separated by a barrier and arranged by white dashed lines on the ground. Hanging above the roads was an information screen which displayed the current time and the next exit numbers.
He drives without stopping for half an hour before he enters another spiral ramp going up and emerges onto a two-way road with two sets of three lanes. Across from him was a different ramp that says “Entrance 1”. He turns left into the furthest set of lanes and enters a more crowded street. The sidewalks were more lively with people who had many distinct features. While the streets had more commuters, there was no traffic jams.
He sees a van parked outside of a bank. It reminded him about a report of a missing van from a plumbing company. Curious, he drove into a futuristic building and parked his truck inside among the dozens of vehicles. Taking the bundle in the back seat, he jogged to the van and examined it. It was too plain for a delivery vehicle. It had a door for the driver, the passenger, and the cargo. There wasn't any sort of logo on it and was purely grey in body. Upon closer inspection, he notices the right side was darker than the whole van and there were a few dents near the handle of the driver's door. From the back window, he finds nothing except for a cardboard box. On the back bumper, he deduced a large sticker was removed recently from the adhesive marks left behind. During the inspection, Jin decides to call his secretary to confirm his suspicions.
He pulls out an odd shaped phone from his pocket which had a rubber grip and a wavy body. The phone makes a few baa's and abruptly stops soon after. Jin says, “Sandy? Are you in the office?” He had a calm voice with a casual tone. Yet it conveyed a deep sense of authority that makes requests difficult to refuse.
A shy, confused voice answers. “Sir?! Uh yes, I was just getting ready to leave. What can I do for you,” Sandy stammered.
“Do you remember the report from Keen Corp?”
“Yes sir. It's on my desk,” she says stiffly.
“Read to me the description of the van.”
“Yes sir. One moment please.” He looked around him while he waited. There were many people outside in the morning on their morning routine. But they seem to avoid walking near him and, in fact, stayed far away across the street while the commuting cars drove onto a different street the moment the drivers saw him. Upon closer inspection, the people seem to be whispering to each other and some were even taking pictures of him like he was rare animal. From the windows, Jin could see the residents peeking through the curtains at what was happening. All eyes were fixated on him to see what his next move was going to be. On the phone, he heard some papers shuffling around before Sandy let out an excited yelp. “Sir, I have the report.”
“Please read it to me.”
Sandy narrates, “Report forwarded by Police Chief Agnes. Original sender, Keen Corporation. A mechanic reported to their supervisor about a missing vehicle from their workshop. A light grey van used to transport small to medium packages. The roof has an indent with two bars on both sides. The right headlight was not functioning from a burnt fuse.” The description was too generic for Jin to discern. At the very least, he can see that the van did have metal bars at the top.
“Anything else about the vehicle?” He moves closer to the van and hears a faint humming sound. He couldn't be certain but he thought he might have heard a ticking sound behind all of that humming. The hum itself was a mystery. What could have made the humming and ticking inside?
“It mentions that a toucan with an outstretched wing is painted on the right side of the van. The van should be missing some hubcaps and the interior is stripped for repair.” Jin was waiting for information that would identify the van more accurately. Although the hubcaps were there, some were newer than others. The darken glass made it difficult to see what was inside the van from the back window. “Uh, there should be some fuzzy dice hanging from the ceiling apparently. And there is a missing side window. The driver forgot to take them off when she drove it in for repairs.”
He looks over at the van and confirms that the side window was missing. Through the front window, there was a pair of neon pink dice hanging from the ceiling. With the other details, Jin concludes that this was likely the missing vehicle. “Sandy, I found the vehicle in question. Tell Loda to quarantine the Lady Justice Bank at Cross and Yuer Street.”
“Yes sir!” He hangs up and makes another call. Three loud pings slowly ring through the streets. The cars nearby drove out of the area and the people hiding nearby scrambled away. Once they got far enough, they continue to watch whatever was about to unfold from the intersection. Lights blinked at the intersections around the bank and neon-coloured pillars rise out of the ground.
After the sounds stop and the area had settled, the baa's from his phone stop. Jin says in a strict voice, “Police Chief Agnes. There will be a conflict at Lady Justice Bank on Cross and Yuer Street. Send two squads there.” He sighs and braces himself for what comes next.
He was greeted with a piercing rough voice. “You! It's 'bout that missin' van we told ye? Why the alarm go off!” He kept the phone away from him as she scolded him. He wondered what accent she had. It didn't seem Scottish, nor did it seem American. Regardless, her harsh greeting every time seemed excessive. “It's a missin' van, not a war!”
“Chief Agnes. The van is rigged with something. And the empowered involved has a physical based Affinity. I need your help.”
“Why ye call for somethin' like this? 'his ye job to fight. Not ours.”
“I need a bomb expert.”
“Ye have your own. Where they go?” He can hear her slamming the desk in a fit of rage. The voices he heard in the background fell silent.
“Time is limited.”
Agnes took a deep breath. “Laddie Justice at Yuer? We'll send Henry, he ought to be gettin' food.”
“Good.” He was about to hang up but he raises his phone back to his ear. “And as a reminder, I notified you in advance that we would rely on your technical experts this week.” Agnes grumbled. “From everyone at the SDA, we appreciate your cooperation.” Jin hangs up before she started to yell harder and calls the last person on his list. He looks at a nearby camera and noticed a blinking light from its dome. Before he could hear a baa, the person immediately picks up.
“Loda-”
An excited voice similar to a child responds. “Hey boss. Sandy-rilla told me all about it. I just put up the barricade and gave the warning to residents.” He could tell that Loda was waiting for him to call. The eagerness in his voice made it more obvious. “Anything else?”
Jin replies, “Check the alleyways.”
“Alrighty then.” A brief moment of silence passed. “What am I looking for? I don't see anything on cams.”
A twig crunches nearby and he turns to see what it was. It was a raccoon skipping across the street and into another alley. It seemed the raccoon was startled by something. Jin orders, “Did you see any animals in the alleys near me?”
“A few pigeons I guess. Some robins.”
“Check camera 72209.”
“Uh sure. Hmm? A raccoon? Where did this little guy come from?”
“Check camera 72210.”
“Alright boss.” After a brief pause, he asked, “Nothing odd here still.”
“Check for tampering.”
“You got it.” Loda's voice becomes quieter as he worked. “Pull up anti-camera measures. Use the laser pointer and...ah hah! Always one step ahead as usual.” He says it with a light and silly tone. “There's a photo in front of the camera.”
Jin runs over to the alley to see what was there. As he thought, he sees a manhole cover hidden behind a garbage can in the alley and a second manhole cover on the ground. Meanwhile, there was a rusty metal box bolted to the wall. He jumps up and gets a firm grip on the box. Without any effort, he rips the metal box off the wall to reveal the camera. Inside the box, there is a photo of the alleyway which pops out of the box and flops to the ground. When he reaches his hand at the manhole cover on the ground, his hand passes through it like it was nothing. Instead, the manhole disappears to reveal a ladder down into a dark hole. “Check every camera again. And do a full security test.”
“Alright alright. I'll tell you if I find anything.” Jin hangs up and leaves the alley. As he got closer to the van, he notices someone hiding behind a dumpster. They wore a grey hoodie with black track pants and leaned on the metal box. He couldn't see their face but their clothing was too large. They seem to be taking a break from jogging but to Jin, it didn't look very comfortable trying to run in it with all of the flaps dragging the person down. Jin considered whether Loda should be punished for the sloppy work or if he is holding back information. Without hesitating, he approaches the mysterious person.
