10: Not The Best Person

10: Not The Best Person

Jul 21, 2023

I follow Steve as he guides me past the science lab. Here I am, trying to have another peaceful day by heading to the library only be told by Steve that apparently my English teacher is calling me. Strange how she didn't just call my name over the PA system.

'Do you know why Ms is calling me?' I ask, following him downstairs.

He scratches his nose, letting his shoes tap against the steps 'Something to do with your grade. Who knows maybe you failed?'

'I doubt it.'

Steve increases his pace and turns around at a corner. I follow before instantly getting splashed with a bucket of water. I wipe my face, hearing the laughter of Steve and the other guys. All in Derek's friend group. Of course.

'Whoo, that was fun.'

I move my hair away from my face. 'What the hell is wrong with you?!'

'Whoa! Calm down, princess. It was just a joke.'

They walked off in laughter as I stood there boiling, thinking.

God, I hate them.

Calm down, Brooke. You'll be fine. Some people are just naturally born assholes.

Ignoring the passing students who snickered at my drenched state, I head to my locker hoping that I left spare clothes.

Conveniently on the way there, I caught eyes with the man himself. The moment he saw me, he immediately laughed his arse off.

'What the hell happened to you?' Derek laughed, very well noticing my annoyed look.

'Your friends are great pranksters. Amazing idea, though I still don't know what was funny about the water bucket.' I say sarcastically, walking off in anger.

'Whoa whoa. I didn't tell them to do anything. Sorry 'bout that.' Derek corrects me, standing in my way.

I sigh, taking a step forward, grabbing Derek's shirt by the collar.

'If any of my notes are drenched, you'll be the one who won't hear the end of it.'

Derek's nose scrunches. 'It's not my fault you decided to come to school with a tote bag instead of a backpack.'

I push him away instantly.

Derek runs after me as I speed past the hallway 'Hey hey, I'll help you out. To say sorry. Is that not enough?'

'What the heck is this?'

A plain blue shirt with denim jeans. No sense of style at all.

'I'm sorry Miss Fashion but are you going to show up to the rest of the classes in drenched clothes?'

'...no...'

'Suck it up then.' Derek snaps as I reluctantly took the clothes.

I changed into clothes and head out of the bathroom and there he was waiting for me.

'Where did you get these clothes from anyway?' I ask trying to change the conversation.

'I have my ways.'

'How informative.'

His eyebrows flinch and he looks straight at me. 'Must you be so sarcastic?'

'It's part of me. Non-negotiable.' I answer smirking.

He looks at my lips and then looks away remarking about something else. Why did he look at my lips? Is he trying to trick me, or make fun of me?

Well, I'm not gonna fall for it. As we walk down back through the hallway, I can't help but question his motivations for even trying to talk to me casually.

'Oi!'

I come to Derek grabbing me by the cheeks.

'What are you doing?' Noticing him staring at me.

'You weren't listening to me,' he remarks letting go of my cheeks.

We arrive at the front office, and he stretches his arms until he hears a crack.

'I'm gonna head off now. I once again apologise for my friends' actions. See you whenever.' Derek flicks my forehead before heading into the office.

I feel that head flick is our new handshake.

I head the opposite way to the cooking room. Derek is annoying, but he's still human. Not unattractive but not at a godly level. Though I know that the majority of people won't agree with me.

After all, the rich attract the most people.

The door to the cooking room was slightly opened and I notice the light on. Giggling was another thing I noticed.

Dear Professor Neuman,

I believe that the position of Head Chef of the Year is an important award that should be earned through hard work. Having the student, Derek Norman, with no evidence of a cooking background (other than taking a Food and Hospitality course for the past 2 years but that doesn't count) be allowed to join the club all because of his nepotistic connection to Professor Neuman isn't fair. I believe that you should reconsider this and not select Derek Norman for the position of Head Chef of the Year.
I expect that you will consider.

Sincerely,
Brooke Monet
