Cooking Complex (Hollins)

14: Not Inconsiderate

14: Not Inconsiderate

Aug 04, 2023

Another day passes and I feel my body slowly passing away. It's one of those days when you're not in the best mood and work is just making it worst.

Byron wasn't doing anything wrong but rather was trying to cheer me up which was nice of him. My other co-worker, Tessa was as supportive helping me cheer up. However, I felt like the gods were playing a game of trying to make me react.

A lady complained about why paper bags were more expensive than plastic bags. Stating how 'hypocritical' we were because of the cost difference. I held myself together with a fake smile (which I hope to God was convincing) as I explained the common sense that paper bags are expensive because they are reusable and need to be made another way. The frustrated lady just rolled her eyes and left the store.

Only deep breaths have been able to keep me stable.

A familiar brunette arrives at the store in a messy state.

Mariah.

'Oh.... hey...' she says awkwardly. Silence follows as she stands at the counter, and we share glances.

Mariah was a lot messier than her usual self. Hair that is usually silky and smooth is now in a state of confusion tied messily in a bun.

Clothes often ironed and stylish are now oversized shirts and random denim shorts. Though her skin was so perfect, practically shimmering.

As always, Mariah looks gorgeous.

Tessa takes Mariah's order before heading off into the back, subtly tapping me on the shoulder.

'So...are you mad?' Mariah asks, catching me off guard.

'N-no. You're my friend. I should be happy for you.' I stammer giving her my customer fake smile.

'U-uh that's good. I was worried you would be horrible and get mad at me. ' Mariah laughed relieved.

'Y-yeah. Glad I'm not horrible.' I smile noticing my hands scratching my thighs.

Am I a horrible friend for wanting to get mad at her?

As I finish off Mariah's order, I notice Mariah's increasing worry about my silence. 'I'm sorry, Brooke.'

'Don't worry. I'm happy for ya. Have a great day.' I laugh smiling and handing over her order.

She chuckles and grabs the bag, smiling back at me. 'Thanks, Brooke.'

Mariah walks off as I stand there feeling...weird. I don't know whether I'm sad, mad or even happy. I'm all over the place.

'You all right, Brooke?' Tessa questions, only seeing my state of desolation.

'Yeah, I'm fine,' I say, fake smiling again.

Just calm down Brooke. You'll be fine.

Right when I calm myself down from losing my head, Derek, Steve and two other guys walk in and head to the counter All 4 of them see me as I internally punch a wall.

The gods must be having so much fun at my misfortune.

Dear Professor Neuman,

I believe that the position of Head Chef of the Year is an important award that should be earned through hard work. Having the student, Derek Norman, with no evidence of a cooking background (other than taking a Food and Hospitality course for the past 2 years but that doesn't count) be allowed to join the club all because of his nepotistic connection to Professor Neuman isn't fair. I believe that you should reconsider this and not select Derek Norman for the position of Head Chef of the Year.
I expect that you will consider.

Sincerely,
Brooke Monet
Year 12 Student at Hollins Senior College
