Campus Romance

Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Sep 04, 2023

I’m sitting in class between Becca and Camilla, it’s really hard to concentrate because they keep whispering to each other. I haven’t properly heard a single word the professor has said during this lecture, which normally wouldn’t bother me, but for some reason I feel it will be embarrassing to show up for one of my study sessions with Wyatt not knowing anything about this week's topic.

Wyatt seems to be another reason why I’m having a hard time focusing in class lately. My eyes wander over to him against my will, it’s like I have to actively stop myself from trying to find him every time I’m either in class or on campus these days.

As I’m accidentally watching him again, I notice that he looks really tired. He has dark circles under his eyes and doesn’t look as focused as he usually does. He’s still actively taking notes like always, but he’s sitting slumped over the desk, hand propped up under his head.

I clearly didn’t hear what the professor just said, but suddenly Wyatt sits up straight and forces a preppy look on his face. He eagerly agrees to help the professor hand out papers, it seems, but as soon as he turns his back to the professor he looks tired again. He hands out papers to the class.

I watch as he walks by this one guy, who is a bit of a jerk, I think his name is Daniel or was it David, maybe Dylan? Dylan “accidentally” spills his coffee cup on the ground in front of Wyatt. Anyone with eyes can see that he did it on purpose.

“Oh, shit! Sorry, dude”, Dylan exclaims, while smirking.

Wyatt doesn’t seem too eager to start a conversation.

“No problem”, Wyatt answers and goes to move past the coffee spill.

“Actually, since you’re on your feet, could you go get something to clean this up with, thanks”, Dylan says and doesn’t really wait for a response, just goes back to talking with the guy next to him.

“Sure, no problem”, Wyatt says and goes to get cleaning supplies.

I’m dumbfounded. He just does it? It wasn’t even his fault that David or whatever his name was, spilled the coffee. What the hell? Why would he clean up after Daniel? Wyatt is clearly exhausted today and still he’s doing everything for everyone as soon as they ask, apparently. If it were me, I would have said no. To be fair, I don’t think anyone would dare ask me to clean up their coffee in the first place, but still.

I must not have hidden my disdain and shock at what happened as well as I thought because Becca turns to me with a quizzical look.

“What? Why do you look so surprised?”, Becca whispers to me.

“Hm? I don’t know, just seems super random that Daniel asked Wyatt to clean it up for him”, I whisper back.

“First off, his name is Dalton, and second of all, it’s not random, he does it all the time”, she gives me a weird look.

“What? All the time?”, I look at Becca in confusion.

“Yeah”, Becca says, “like all the time”.

“Dalton likes messing with Wyatt”, Camilla now joins in, “because he knows Wyatt never says no to anyone and will literally do anything, for anyone, all the time”.

“Yeah”, Becca agrees, “it’s been going on from since we started studying, haven’t you noticed Audrey?”.

“Really? I had no idea”, I say. I guess I’m really bad at noticing my surroundings, I think maybe I’ve been so focused on myself, I haven’t paid attention to much else. Huh.

For the remainder of the class Becca keeps close watch on what or who I’m looking at, with a suspicious expression on her face, it’s like she’s trying to figure out why I noticed what happened between Dalton and Wyatt now of all times. So, I focus extra hard on looking unbothered and normal, and I am extra careful not to glance at Wyatt. Last thing I want is Becca starting gossip about how much I look at Wyatt.

Audrey is starting to notice Wyatt more and more... what will it lead to? A campus romance, perhaps? Hehe. Let's wait and see...

Opposites attract in this secret campus romance.

Audrey is the campus queen, beautiful and rich, but also a bit spoiled and judgemental. Wyatt is bright and studious, but with low self-esteem and a wallflower personality.

A one-time hookup at a volunteering event leads to a secret romance between these two very different personalities. But can they overcome their differences and withstand the scrutiny of prying eyes? Or is their relationship best kept as a secret?

Update: I have written and completed a spin-off (that also works as a standalone) novel about Eve and Irene called Love Drunk. Check it out!
