Arkha and the 2 mercenaries return to the estate to report back to Master Vikara.
Vikara is sitting with a rather glum expression on his face.
Arkha steps forward and announces - "It was Irdan Khasim's doing. He wanted to provoke Karni."
Vikara - "My is he persistent! I got worried for nothing. But since he went so far for a challenge. I believe we should return the favour."
Arkha - "What do you have in mind master?"
Master thinks for some time. There is a long silence.
Vikara - "You'll know soon enough."
Arkha has a sly grin on her face.
Karni is with Varaha helping him to settle a dispute over land in the Butto district. A few rich farmers seem to be stubborn and are restricting the smaller farmers from cultivating any crops. There is a huge crowd flogged at the site.
The rich farmers are dressed much like a noble would.
He wrangles away - "You will not cultivate nothing! Pay the taxes and then I will think about permitting you."
Varaha intervenes - "What is with this petty squabble? The poor man needs some time. He has no money to pay the tariffs right now."
The rich farmer - "This is the fourth-month master. They have been evading us for too long. We gave them ample amount of time to pay their taxes. Now our patience is at its absolute end. Either we get paid or these peasants leave our land."
Varaha - "Calm down. Let's all bring the temper down shall we."
A few men dressed as nobles steer through the crowd.
One among them walks towards Varaha and nudges him back - "The Kevas own this land now. You can exercise your authority elsewhere. Now then, the young master can leave."
Varaha smiles and politely replies - "I was not exercising any authority. A few of these poor farmers worked in our fields and harvested the produce which helped us survive the harsh winters. I recognize the hands that fed me throughout these years."
The nobleman - "Walk away son. I have no time to hear all your philosophies."
Varaha turns around and looks at Karni. He then looks at the nobleman - "Forgive me but I just cannot walk away."
Nobleman - "Not a problem. We know exactly how to convince you."
The nobleman signals his men.
Karni steps in front. He looks dead in the eyes of the nobleman - "Don't do something you'll regret."
The nobleman slaps Karni. Nobleman - "How dare a lowborn like you raise your voice to me?"
Karni delivers a swift punch and draws his sword.
All the men back down.
The nobleman is furious but quiet. He is taken away by his fellow men.
The rich farmer is advised by his companions to stay quiet.
"He has an infamous name - 'The Silhouette of Death'. Very few men have seen him draw his sword and live." says one of the companions.
Varaha puts his arm on Karni's shoulder - "Sheath your sword Karni."
Karni sheathes his sword.
Varaha - "This was all unnecessary. I tried to..."
The rich farmer - "...you have disrespected one of the highly respected treasury. The consequences of your actions will be severe. We all leave for now. You've brought your friends one more month to pay up their dues. Next time we shalln't be ill-equipped. We shall be here with the king's elite soldiers."
Varaha - "I appreciate your kindness. I'll make sure they make the payments this time."
The rich farmer and his companions leave.
Karni - "I hope getting involved was worth the effort."
Varaha - "It was."
Varaha walks towards the smaller farmers. The smaller farmers thank him and wish him well for stopping them from being evicted from their land.
Karni stands at a good distance behind Varaha looking at the smiling faces of the poor farmers. He has a blank expression but his eyes convey an emotion of joy.
Varaha turns back and smiles at Karni. Karni smiles too.
Vikara is inside a large catacomb. He meets with a man who is referred to as the overseer of the arena fights.
Overseer - "The tournament begins in 4 months. You are applying way too early master Vikara."
Vikara - "The list comes out 2 months before the tournament. Why not update the list now?"
Overseer - "We have some conduct and procedures. You must understand."
Vikara - "Well I want the list now. I can't wait another 2 months."
Overseer - "I mean...I don't understand the urgency. But if it means so much to you I'll create the list...informally."
