I glare at her warily. By chance? They found me by chance? No fucking way. You don’t find someone by chance in Sandy Springs. No one comes through this town by chance. This place is a pitstop for truckers and tourists no one else ever comes through.
I reach down to the passenger seat floor and grab the first heavy object my hand grazes—a crowbar. I throw the door open and keep a steady eye on them. “Who the fuck are you?” I demand.
The girls both throw their hands up defensively, “Woah, my guy. We come in peace, I swear. I’m Kelsey and this is my sister Lainey.”
I look between the two of them. They look harmless enough, but I know that looks can be deceiving especially when it comes to my kind. They could have telekinesis like my dad did or some other trick that could take me out. I keep my guard up.
“Why the fuck are you here?” I ask while pointing the flattened end of the crowbar at them.
“Wow, this was such a bad idea.” Kelsey mutters. “Listen, we were just passing through, honest truth, and then we felt you and we were curious. That’s it. I swear we were just on our way to see Rita. We work for her.”
“Who the fuck’s Rita?” I ask. There’s more of them out here? Since when? I tighten my grip on the crowbar until my knuckles turn white.
Kelsey and Lainey share a confused look, “Rita.” Kelsey repeats. “The conductor. The one who smuggles aliens…” They’re both looking at me like I should know what they’re talking about, but everything they’re saying is going straight over my head. “Listen things would be easier if we just shared our thoughts.”
Fuck that. “Not a chance.” I growl out. “Come near me and I’ll bash your goddamn brains in.” I’m not letting strangers inside my head. No fucking way.
Kelsey blows out a breath, “Okay, clearly there’s been some miscommunication.” She glances at her sister before continuing, “Listen you got here and then someone set you up with paperwork, money, a place to stay. That’s Rita or someone who works for Rita. She runs the underground railroad. Every alien that comes to Earth comes through her.” She explains. She looks at me expectantly as if all of that should be making sense and maybe a part of it does because I know that someone was helping my parents when they got here, but Dad never said who and I never met them. So whoever this Rita is my dad didn’t trust her and neither do I.
I narrow my eyes at them, “First never met a Rita.” I stare coldly, “And secondly I didn’t come from anywhere, I sure as fuck wasn’t smuggled. I was born here.” I explain.
Kelsey and Lainey look at me like I’ve grown a second head, “Well, that’s impossible.”
“Are you half human?” The other sister finally speaks up. Her words come out soft and inquiring.
Kelsey turns on her, “That's dumb, alien plus human just equals more human. He’s telepathic we both felt it. He’s definitely alien.” She reasons. I stare between the two of them. They have no clue who I am or who my parents are. The really don’t have anything to do with the soldiers hunting me.
I breathe out slowly and try to let go of my paranoia. I turn and toss the crowbar back into my truck while the two of them are still bickering about alien/human relations. I don’t know who they are, where they came from, or why they’re here, but if they’re not here for me then I don’t really care.
I stalk past them causing them to stop and stare at me, “Wait, where you going?” Kelsey asks as I head back to the bar.
“Fuck off.” I reply earning me a couple of mean looks.
“Wait!” Kelsey jumps forward and stops me as I open the door. “Aren’t you curious about where you came from? What you are? How you wound up here?”
I shake my head. Yes, I am, but I don’t tell her that. My dad never told me squat about anything and I’m sure there was reason for that. After Mom died we were on our own, no one helped us. Not anyone human, alien, or some conductor named Rita. I stare into Kelsey’s penetrating blue eyes, “I don’t give a fuck about any of that.” I answer. “I've got my life settled here and I don’t need you two bimbos drawing attention to me and ruining it. So wherever it was you two were going I suggest you get back to it.”
Kelsey’s mouth drops open in outrage, “Bimbos?” She repeats after me even as I slam the door in her face.
I inhale the acrid scent of beer and mixed nuts while trying to calm my shaking nerves. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to meet more of my kind. Well, now I know. I shake off the lingering anxiety and go back to the front of the bar.
“Everything good?” Gina asks as I take my place by her side again.
“Fine.” I reply with a shrug even though in the periphery of my thoughts I can still feel those two women close by. Like a storm Kelsey barges her way through the front door with her sister in tow.
