Karni opens his eyes. He immediately wakes up and sees himself in a small bed. The room is quite small and untidy. A man walks inside the room.
Man - "You're awake? Very good. Meet the Abbot immediately."
Karni looks at his missing arm. He looks shattered but keeps a blank expression and replies - "Where am I?"
Man - "You are in Jetayu territory. This is the temple - Vinayaka Dwaram. We take care of men, animals and plants alike. Every living being has a story to tell. Depriving them could lead to unparalleled misery."
Karni gets up off the bed and leaves the room. Outside the room, he sees a huge arch beyond which a man is playing a flute surrounded by cows and other cattle. Karni approaches the man playing the flute.
Karni - "Are you the Abbot of this monastery?"
The man stops playing the flute.
The man smiles and replies - "One of the Abbots."
Karni - "So what am I supposed to do now? I am the caretaker of the Vyasa family. I need your permission to let me leave as quickly as you can."
The man - "We have not even exchanged names, and you're already planning to leave. Quite the disrespect."
Karni - "...I...My apologies Abbot. What is your name?"
The man - "I am Krishna."
Karni - "Good to see you. My name is Karni."
Krishna - "I think the Abbot that you particularly are looking for is near the well at the western end."
Karni bows as a gesture of thanks and walks towards the western side of the temple.
Karni sees that the temple overlays over a forest.
There is an entire ecosystem inside the giant structure.
The news is that a tiger is on the prowl.
The tribe warriors are guarding the forest. This is to ensure that no one enters inside a tiger territory and also to stop the tiger from killing the temple devotees.
Karni is fascinated by their lifestyle. He suddenly sees a monk-like figure sitting below a tree with a staff in hand.
Karni approaches him. The monk is meditating. This monk's attire is quite different from the attire of regular monks. This monk wears a mix of normal clothing with a monk's shall wrapped around his neck.
Karni - "Are you an Abbot?"
The monk wakes up from his meditation.
Karni - "Forgive me for disturbing your prayer. Could you let me leave? I want to go back to my home."
The monk - "What is your name?"
Karni - "Karni. Help me get back....please..."
The monk sits more comfortably with his legs extended and no longer crossed.
He looks at Karni and says - "Very well."
The monk wakes up and asks Karni to follow him.
Karni follows him and walks up to a well.
Monk - "What do you see in front of you?"
Karni - "A well."
Monk - "Yes. An ordinary well."
Karni seems confused by all this.
Monk - "I need you to jump inside that well."
Karni is perplexed by this request from the monk.
Karni - "Why? The well looks deep. I don't know if I can climb back out either."
Monk - "Did you see a man playing a flute on the way here?"
Karni - "Yeah. His name was Krishna."
Monk - "Yes, that's him. Well, he wants you to be punished for your crimes."
Karni - "Crimes?"
Monk - "4 years ago you along with the Vayusattva killed and burned down an entire village."
Karni feels numb. His eyes are overwhelmed with guilt. He opens his mouth to speak up but his voice won't come out. He tries again but is unable to speak.
Krishna has appeared behind them.
Krishna playfully - "Arahant, why haven't you executed him yet?"
The monk is Arahant Bodhisattva, the legendary sage of the arena.
Arahant - "I don't believe in killing those who've sinned in their lives. Sins do not reduce a man to become worthless. Life is not given to humans to just end up being eliminated. Every man must atone for their sins. The gift of living always gives humans new purpose. Many will turn evil, naturally, but once you live long enough, you'll be given a chance to change your path. Snuffing out someone's life before they have a chance to atone should be the greatest sin."
Krishna - "Every life is equally important. This man snuffed out the lives of hundreds in a village. They may no longer change their purpose or motivations. Like you said...he has indeed committed the greatest sin."
Arahant walks towards Krishna. Krishna smiles.
Arahant gets close and replies - "All lives have the same value you say. If a king fights in the war and dies, the war is over, but a few hundred soldiers dying on the frontlines would be considered ordinary. Lives will never have the same value. Humans turn animals into cattle, they discriminate among their kind to feel superior, and they create laws to judge and kill based on moral codes listed in a book."
Krishna - "Morality versus Rationality. Humans only survived and evolved due to their drive to remain ahead in the race of life. I see your point...but not everyone deserves a chance at redeeming themselves. It's better to end their lives before they bring more destruction."
Arahant - "I wish to take that chance."
Krishna - "I seek no pleasure in taking someone's life. But I want you to make sure he doesn't go back to a life of crime."
Arahant - "He won't make such a choice."
Karni - "Life of crime! Can't you see? I've lost my arm..."
Karni is shocked to see that his arm is replaced with a golden arm. The golden arm is attached to his shoulder blade. Karni touches the wounds on his back and feels metal. He is in disbelief.
Karni - "What is this magic?"
Arahant - "Not magic. This is the power of Paragon."
