Still May here! And in our ’23 Calendar, May was for Obsidian Rhapsody, this time a Universe you already know pretty well because is one of those with more illustrations published, also one of those we talk about more. So here are back for you the Mughal India Randy and Lu Han portraying an alternative version of Emperor Jahāngīr and Nūr Jahān’s wedding on 25^th May 1611.

Nūr al-Dīn Muhammad Salīm, the fourth Mughal Emperor, aka Jahāngīr ‘Conqueror of the World’, took Mehr al-Nesā, aka Nūr Jahān ‘Light of the World’ as his twentieth wife, who considered his very true love, and who became the real head behind the throne and gain unprecedented power and freedom for a Mughal empress. The story of these two characters is one of those that is worth reading, we encourage you to do so! Furthermore, to their reign we owe most of the finest Mughal pieces of art produced. Both were active patrons of art and architecture; Jahāngīr himself was a collector, he maintained an atelier of his own and ordered the assemble of albums to preserve masterpieces from Iran, curiosities from Europe, works produced during the reign of his father Akbar, and many of Jahāngīr’s master painters’ works. All surrounded by magnificent borders decorated with a wide variety of floral and geometrical designs, those we took as inspiration for this illustration. One of his favourite artists was Ustād Manṣūr, designated Nādir-ul-ʿAṣr ‘Wonder of the Time” by him, whose studies of birds and other animals are unparalleled.

In this Universe of Guzbourine, we portray Randy as a fictional version of heir prince Jahāngīr being Lu Han at the same time the mysterious Nūr Jahān and a new court artist coming from China who’s about to become the prince’s favourite just as Nādir-ul-ʿAṣr. How? You’d need to wait for more illustrations and short stories for now to discover all the secrets this royal family is protecting which Lu Han itself will step on one after the other, releasing a world full of magic and creatures he’d never imagine he’d ever meet, including –maybe– the prince himself.

We hope you enjoy this universe that we suspect is going to be one of the responsible for our deaths if we manage to design and paint all the backgrounds and art required…

Random data: For Lu Han’s veil we tested for the first time the versatility of our brand-new white ink looking for a transparent effect, and it rocks! Won’t be the last time you’ll see effects like this made with this white ink during this Ephemeris series so hope you like them!
