"Answer me one thing, Gospodin," Mimi said as John walked away. "Hm?", he hummed curiously. "You seem to dislike my business. Why?". John shrugged, "I'm just not into it.". "But everyone is 'into it', mister.", she said, eyes widening slightly. She puffed her cigarette, saying "Are you scared?". John walked back towards her, wary of her still bloodied forearms. "Nope. I just don't like this sort of thing.". Mimi snickered, saying "How vanilla.". John raised his eyebrow, saying "No, wrong thing. I mean sex. I don't care what you're into, though. Latex, pain, that's all fine. None for me.". She nodded, responding "Understandable. We all get the, uh... What do you call it? The ick. We all get the ick sometimes.". John nodded back before she groaned at his walking away. "You told me about Dorien. Why did he need me?".

He snapped his finger, saying "That's right! He needed me to give you this book.". Mimi's usually lifeless black eyes brightened as she laid them upon the ornate leather cover, only for John to discover the light came from the gothic chandelier above them. She put her cigarette into an ashtray on a table near her, before reaching her hands toward the book. Her expression, glowing with malevolence, made him pull the book away, jerking backward. "Give it to me.", she said, her accent heavy with rage. "You're a bit whacked out lookin', maybe you should calm down?". Her eye twitched, essentially calling her own bluff. "I am calm.", she said while the corners of the lips on her mask elevated slightly. He stood his ground and if anything, moved the book farther away from her.

"Why did Dorien call you his last resort?", he asked apprehensively. "Eto ta kniga! Eta chertova kniga!", Mimi screeched. "English, Sokalova!". "The book!", she screeched yet again. John looked down at the book, saying "Yes, what about the book?". "Too powerful! A weak-minded being as you should not be trusted with it...", she said, sneering behind her mask. "Oh, and I should entrust the psycho dominatrix with it? Sounds like neither of us is exactly moral.", he said with a slight chuckle. She faked a chuckle before launching herself at him with a scream. "Woah!", he said before shoving the book into his coat again and pinning her down on the couch. "Let go, Gospodin! This is my chance!", she said, squirming under his arms. "Nope. I prefer not to give a very dangerous book to a psychopath.", he said between pants.

"John!", he heard behind him. He turned his head to see a furious Dorien rushing towards him. "I told you to bring it to her, not interrogate her!". "Damn it, Dorien! If you saw the face she made when she saw it, you would have pinned her down too.". "Dorien! Save me from this madman!", Mimi whined. Dorien smirked before pushing John off of her, instead pulling her hair to bring her head upwards. "Aah!", she whimpered. "Don't think I'm on your side, Mistress.", he whispered into her ear.

"Just because I don't want him to kill you doesn't mean I don't want to.". "Ok, fine! Don't give me the book. Go to Anderson. I'm sure he'll help you idiots!". Dorien raised his eyebrow before unpinning her. "That's a good idea. Thank you, Mimi.". She turned around, moving some of her hair off her face. "Suka...", she muttered under her breath. Dorien smirked again, responding "You forget, Miss Sokolova... Ya govoryu na russkom yazyke. Good day.". He held John's hand as he walked out of the woman's workspace, hearing her cursing him out in Russian behind him. "Should we stop her?", John asked. "We don't have to. We can just let her scream at us.", Dorien laughed. "I'm assuming that's code for you think that's funny?". "You know me quite well already."

Something's off about Miss Sokolova... However, I just need to disclose one thing. I am in no way demonizing sex work. I came up with her being a dominatrix before I came up with the whole "she drinks blood thing".

"John Doe is a laid-off detective in the year 3006, who finds the only book left in existence. The creator of this book cursed whoever would read it, with great responsibility. The reason is unknown, but it is widely believed that the writer was a being millions of years old that was angry at the world for moving past books, so they cursed the book, calling it the Crying Story. The curse is that whoever reads the book is then given the responsibility of protecting it from the demons inside. There are seven entities in it, and in the wrong hands, they could wreak havoc on the entire world. The most dangerous entity in the book is called The Joyous Day. Those who go to it for guidance have never returned. John Doe is given this responsibility and understands the weight of it. The fate of the world is in his hands." All these details and more are in Julian Ferguson's latest fifth novel, "John Doe: Detective Extraordinaire".
