The lieutenant added the name to the system and moved to the next squad. While the name was already decided, Nolan was still thinking of a name for the squad. He just didn’t hear the conversation with Lieutenant. After every squad announced its name a notification appeared on their phones. It was a list of their class with students assigned to their squads.

After school, Lieutenant Meyer went to the tower, to the director’s office. Even though the city is in a safe location there are many patrols of soldiers walking around the city. Mainly for psychological reasons. Seeing their protectors ready for battle makes people feel safe.
-Lieutenant Meyer. Ready to report, sir.
-Did you make him a captain?- Asked director Makinen.
-Yes. Under the excuse to find a captain, I made the students duel each other. Osir didn’t show any interest in being captain but luckily one more student was needed for the duels. He obeyed my every order.
-How did the duels go?
-Three students showed potential and were chosen to be captains. One of them is the son of a soldier. Thomas Bright. The other one is a girl, Julia Wirkus. Compared to Thomas she doesn’t have a talent for combat but she is able to make quick decisions and prepare good tactics on the go. Of course, they can’t be compared to Osir. To not drag any attention I made him look a bit above average putting Thomas and Julia above him.
-Good. Anything else?
-For now, it doesn’t look like his lack of emotion prevents him from contact with other students.
-But this lack of emotion makes it harder to keep him on our side. If my guess is right Osir and Tobias should become rank S Espers after the school. Tobias for sure will stay on our side… but Osir is a wild card. Inform all teachers about it. We need to make Osir stay on our side and not use force to do it.
-Is that all, sir?
-Yes. Dismissed, soldier.
When the Lieutenant left the office, Matias changed the cameras on his screen to footage from the school ground. One of them was a view of the dorms and a good view of Osir’s room. Osir was on his desk checking something on his phone.
-For now, only the curiosity of his past is keeping him on our side. For how long will it work? There is also a situation where he might change sides after reaching that truth… Why did you make him that way…
Since Osir came back to his room he sat on the phone all day. Checking all news on the internet to know the current situation in the world. Even though he is clueless he found out that there is much propaganda in there. It was hard to know who is telling the truth. The only thing that they all had similar was that Africa became a wasteland for machines that for unknown reasons became hostile to all humans. After the third world war, all countries have disappeared from the map and none of them have been reconstructed. There is no law. The world has fallen and become unstable.
Sometimes he took breaks from the internet surfing and looked out of the window. He watched the life of typical students with curiosity. He saw girls chatting and laughing on the bench. He saw boys goofing around on the field. He saw squads and pairs alike walking around the school ground, enjoying the sunset. He took one last look at his phone and left the room.
Osir took a deep breath to get the feel of the cold and refreshing air of the north. He didn’t have a reason to take a walk but he had a feeling that he has to. He just walked straight forward, checking people around him from time to time.
-Hey, you. White hair.
Osir turned around just to see a familiar face sitting on the stairs with a can of soda in her hand. It was the girl with characteristic red eyes that won the duel and became the captain of the squad.
-What is it?- Asked Osir.
-Who are you? You are special, aren’t you? And I’m not talking about your unusual white hair. The lieutenant chooses you as the candidate from all of the people. He also knew your name when he asked the rest of us.
-I only met him at the entrance exam.
-That’s still something unusual…
-What’s the point?
-What?
-What’s the point of asking me all of that?
-Just my curiosity. I want to meet the people from my class. I’m Julia Wirkus. I’m from Poland.
-My name is Osir.
-That’s all? No surname, no origin?
-Don’t know them.- Said Osir as he walked away.
-That was cold…
By the school, there were two vending machines with drinks and snacks. Osir tried to figure out how to get a can of soda from the machine. He opened the pick-up box and tried to reach the can from there.
-That’s not how you get the snacks from vending machine…
Once Osir looked up he saw Tobias leaning against the machine. Watching Osir still trying to reach the can of soda. He sighed and pressed his phone against the number pad. An icon of a green lock appeared on the screen.
-What do you want? Cola? Orange soda?
-Lemon.-Answered Osir while he took his hands off the machine.
-Here you go.- Tobias gave the can to Osir.
-Thanks.
-I heard you’re the captain of the squad.- Said Tobi as he got himself a can of soda too.- Already showing potential. So how did you name your squad?
-ZERO.
-You’re not very talkative as I can see that you’re a man of a few words. Hope we meet at a joint training.- Said Tobias as he left Osir, waving to him while walking away.
