It was a Wednesday morning and we were preparing our cheer for a football game that would be in a few days. The team had formed a circle in the middle of the school gymnasium where some of us were warming up and some, including me, were stretching. Kel stood in the center of the circle, keeping an eye on everyone as per usual.
Usually during this part of practice was when Kel would also bring up her “brilliant” ideas for upcoming events, parties and such. So it wasn’t out of the ordinary when we heard her clear her throat before bringing up a surprise element for an upcoming school event we were going to be performing at.
Turns out, this particular surprise was out of the ordinary though. Instead of her making a spectacle where she is the center of attention, she “wanted the attention to be on someone else, for a change”.
The way she seemed to savor every word as she said them made me stop in my tracks.
This can’t be good.
I shifted my position so I was now sitting with my legs crossed as I braced myself for what she had planned.
Kel then explained how she recently saw a movie that was absolutely hilarious, and had the perfect scene she absolutely had to recreate. It very soon became clear the movie she gave raving reviews to was Carrie, and she wanted to pour something on an unsuspecting student. I had a feeling she missed the point of the story, but that was not what was important.
Kel went on to say she really did consider pig's blood, but she “hates the smell”. I was dumbfounded.
Angry, and disgusted too, but mainly dumbfounded.
To be clear, I was not taken aback by how she was too put off by the smell of pigs blood but had been okay with her on/off boyfriend making people in the team use other animal byproducts as “pranks” on each other before. Apparently his father is a butcher and seems to not care about him using whatever they don’t manage to sell or use themselves.
What shocked me was the fact her treatment of the team had always been separate to how she treated outsiders. She had always made sure to keep up appearances, but the moment you were a part of the team, that facade started to crack.
When I say facade, she has never tried to appear nice. Her fake persona she presented to outsiders was just someone who’s clearly mean and petty, but it never went beyond that. People just saw her as a dick who’d started nasty rumors and came up with some mean nicknames.
She had never gotten physical with others, and the guy who had rejected her had been the worst anyone outside the team had been treated.
The reason I consider this to be a new low, is because when you're in the team, you can leave. Kel loses all interest in the ones that admit defeat. She has always seemed to have her fun with the people who put up a fight either with her torment, or with what the other members in the team do to stay in her good books.
When you leave, in her eyes you have given up, and are no longer fun to poke around.
With unsuspecting outsiders who think she is just a plain ol' bitch, her pulling something like this would be a whole new low.
