Geology major here! Peacock ore is a very fun mineral.
It’s specifically both chalcopyrite and boronite growing together, and it gets its vibrant colors from layers of Oxidation! Greens and pale blues are young and thin layers, while old and thicker layers are deep blues and purple.
The mineral itself is in fact a dull gold color when freshly broken!
P.S. I’m not so sure your chosen photo is peacock ore… Chalcopyrite doesn’t have hexagonal monoclinic crystals. It’s part of the tetragonal crystal family. The photo shown resembles titanium quartz more, which has the same colors, but is artificially made by ionizing metals (titanium) across the crystal surface. Not unlike the aforementioned oxidation, but a different process.
P.P.S Love the comic! I can’t wait until the next issue!
