My Pathetic Roommate is a God

Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Oct 07, 2023

June’s mind was a busy mess; she kept having to organize and reorganize her thoughts and responsibilities for the day. English class had just ended, so it was off to math, where she could hopefully get some of her social studies work done. With all this going on, she completely forgot about the feral boy she had left unattended at her apartment to watch paint dry.

She tucked her bag underneath her desk chair. She was musing about whether or not she could squeeze in some of her leftover science work during lunch when she caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of her eye. She looked out the window and saw... was that person jumping on the rooftops? Weird... they looked like they were wearing a cloak. And they seemed to be carrying someone else in tow, poor guy. That someone else was awfully familiar... they seemed to be a boy with white hair. A boy with... long white hair.

CIEL GOT KIDNAPPED? June sprung out of her seat, causing everyone around her to look at her.

“UH- I’ve got... Mr. Olsen, could I go to the nurse’s office please?”

Where’d they go? Where’d they go? June repeated in her head over and over. She had so much to do today, why’d he have to go and get kidnapped today!? June then chastised herself for thinking that way; it’s not like he CHOSE to kidnapped. Well, she hoped not anyway.

Running around like a maniac, glaring at all the rooftops like she had some personal roof-vendetta, she finally caught sight of that shadowy figure dashing away. It headed towards a cramped alleyway. June followed, pushing civilians out of her way with little care.

When she finally caught up, she saw the cloaked figure had shoved Ciel against the wall. He held Ciel by the collar, while his other hand held a sword at his side.

“Tell me, Ciel. Tell me! Why. Did. You. Do. It. Are you that braindead? Tell me!” He accosted Ciel, hardly giving him room to respond. Not that it seemed to matter anyway; Ciel flopped like a ragdoll.

Though dazed looking, Ciel seemed unharmed at least. June breathed a sigh of relief before approaching. “Let him go!”

The figure turned to look at June, and at that moment, the wind blew off his hood. Underneath was a handsome boy who looked about Ciel’s age, maybe a little younger. He had olive skin, heavy eyebags, and unkempt, shaggy black hair.

“Who are you? Are you his keeper?”

“Keeper?” June questioned.

Ciel finally came to then, and stared in shock at the boy currently threatening him. “...Simon?”

The boy, Simon, glared back at him. “Yeah, duh! Who else would’ve saved you?”

“You kidnapped me!”

“I had to!”

“Hang on, you guys know each other?” June asked.

Simon answered her. “Yes. We grew up together. We’re very close... Or I guess I should say were very close. Before somebody up and-”

“We’re close, we’re close! Now please let me go and stop threatening to stab me!” Ciel pleaded. Simon heeded his plea this time.

As it turned out, Ciel and Simon really were good childhood friends in the heavens. Ciel was the son of the storm goddess, Malevinda, and the sun god, Solis. Simon was the son of the moon god, Fengari, and the sea goddess, Nankluea. As all of their parents worked closely with each other, they naturally had to spend a lot of time together.

“So... why’d you kidnap and threaten him?” June asked Simon.

“... I thought he was being held captive. I don’t think it’s normal to watch paint dry, so I thought he was being forced to as a part of some sick game. He’s kind of dumb. He’d fall for it.”

“Hey!” Ciel protested.
June cleared her throat. “It was a training exercise... to help him learn patience.”

“Oh, I see,” Simon’s eyes lit up with understanding. “So you’re his mentor then, huh? Good luck.”

“Thanks... Wait, but why were you threatening him?”

“Oh, that.” The bitterness returned to Simon’s voice. “We were close, but then somebody decided it would be totally cool to leave a note about how hey things aren’t really working out haha, and then proceed to drink himself into oblivion and then get himself banished into oblivion as a result.”

“Oh.” Oh.

Ciel made a weird strangled coughing noise, averting his gaze from both Simon and June. Once the awkward silence became too unbearable, Ciel broke it. “So, so, why did you come down here in the first place anyway?”

Simon’s eyebrow twitched. “Your parents so graciously asked me to come down to check up on you,” he said with a tone of And I so graciously did not tell them about your pathetic excuse for a breakup. “They wanted me to make sure you weren’t starving to death or something. Guess mortal forms have to eat. Weird.”

“Well, you checked in, and everything is fine, so! We have to get home, so...” June cut in before Ciel could even dare to open his mouth about how June found him. She felt the tension of the situation could not stand it.

With an awkward exchange of goodbyes, June dragged Ciel along with her back home. With some mental calculations, June figured by the time she’d get back to school it’d already be past lunch; in other words, less than half the day would be left. Guess I’m skipping today.
