Chapter 2
It was no wonder the room was so dark as he was looking into the gaping jaw of a wendigo. The monster was ready to sink its razor-sharp fangs into his head. Kaleb freezes in the spot and breaks into a cold sweat. He feels a rush of fear coming down on him like a ton of bricks, causing his legs to shake as he looks at the monster's sharp teeth. The stench of blood filled his nostrils, making it hard to breathe. He was sweating bullets, with the uneasiness settling in his stomach. The sharp teeth began to close themselves together. His eyes flashed wide open, and his whole body flinched as it snapped out of the paralyzing fear. Kaleb could see the creature's yellow teeth gnashing together as he slammed the door shut, catching a small glimpse of its hungry red eyes.
With caution, Kaleb slowly backs away from the door. He was so bewildered by the horrifying sight that he couldn’t believe his eyes. The floor betrays him by making the lightest creak that sounds like a gunshot along the empty house. He freezes in place once again, making him stand in an awkward position. The sound made his throat dry, and he felt like he was swallowing nothing but sand. The silence eats away his thoughts, and fear courses through his nerves. His breathing becomes frantic and loud when he hears a low growl behind the door.
The door goes flying letting loose the horrifying monster.
It crashes into the bathroom door along with the creature. The monster had tackled down the door to get Kaleb but missed. He continues to walk backward and begins to pick up the paste. He spots the creature coming out of the bathroom with pieces of debris on top of its head from the destroyed doors. The monster was soaked in cold water head to toe, water dripping from its mouth and head. Kaleb laid his eyes upon the huge and horrifying thing in shock.
"It's a wendigo?" Kaleb muttered with a shaky voice, fear escaping through his lips.
He of course has never seen one but he has heard the tales. A creature tall and lanky, driven by hunger, its ribs were showing, its skin was a blueish gray color, elongated arms to catch its prey, and its eyes were glowing a bright ominous red. Just when Kaleb was about to make a run for it, he saw another Wendigo come out of the room. Two wendigos were looking back at him with ravenous eyes. Confused and terrified he thought this was the end. He wholeheartedly believed that this would be the end. The end for the two wendigos standing right in front of him. Five times the size he was, he believed a mere child like himself could defeat two huge and terrifying beasts standing before him. The fear subsided and the adrenaline for survival kicked in. Kaleb quickly shoved his shaky hand into his baggy pants pocket.
"Wow, who knew a gun would come in handy in a time like this?" Kaleb asked in a sarcastic tone before pulling out his weapon. "Well, I did but not for this, "Kaleb announced, out loud with a large grin gradually spreading on his face.
It was as if the wendigos understood what he was saying. The damp monster was ready to duck. Kaleb pulls out a small 9 mm pistol and shoots it cleanly into the wet Wendigo's skull and it goes down with a loud thud. Kaleb is a great shooter just like his mother,, he was going to carry on her legacy and there was no way he was going to die here.
The loud bang from Kaleb’s gun brought Betsy's attention. She slams her door open and comes upon a blue rabbit standing right in front of the doorway. She steps on it lightly feeling its fuzzy and soft fur. She grabs it, throws it inside her room, and shuts the door behind her. Right before she entered the kitchen she turned into a wendigo herself—a cold and frightening beast like the ones with Kaleb in the kitchen. Betsy looked different from the other two in the kitchen.
She had antler horns and her stature was a bit smaller in size compared to the other two in the kitchen. The whole family was made out of wendigos. This was why the family was considered exceptionally talented hunters. Wendigos can hunt without making a speck of noise, they can also see from a great distance. Betsy was still blind, but she still had a heightened sense of smell and hearing since that's what she'd always rely on.
Just before Betsy enters the kitchen she can smell one human and two wendigos with her acute sense of smell. She could sniff out Kaleb and the twins. When she enters the kitchen, Kaleb turns around and points his gun at Betsy. He didn’t know it was Betsy trying to help him so he had no choice, but to shoot her. Just before Kaleb could pull the trigger, the dry wendigo wrapped her claws around the boy's head and lifted him off the ground. The monster’s incredible speed passed through Kaleb’s eyes, and without even realizing it he was lifted off the ground. He could feel the monster’s grasp tighten around his head feeling like it was going to explode.
Betsy throws an uppercut into Asa's jaw, shocked by the impact she accidentally drops Kaleb. Kaleb lands on his back on the wooden floor and lets go of his weapon. Betsy then tries her best to buy Kalebt more time to collect his gun and make a run for it. Asa wasn't going to let up over a measly punch, she returned the favor by aiming for Betsy's ribs. Betsy wasn't going to be able to block a powerful punch from a beast twice her size; her arms would simply snap in half, so she used her jaw. A Wendigo's teeth and jaw are the toughest part of their body.
With an immense force, Betsy chomps down onto Asa's arm successfully blocking the attack towards her ribs. Asa was in complete awe of Betsy. She somehow can see Asa's attack coming from a mile away. Betsy has never revealed this ability to her family members before; instead, she acts weak around them. At that moment Betsy decides to restrict Asa's movements by grabbing her other arm. Under those circumstances, Asa was now mobile. Betsy now had a hold of both of her arms. Asa had no other choice but to use her jaws that was capable of ripping a palm tree into shreds. Asa’s jaw opened an abnormal 180 degrees, it was capable of ripping a palm tree into shreds. Betsy once again somehow predicted Asa's moves. She grabs Asa's bottom jaw and slams it shut.
Seeing that Betsy had restricted them both from fighting she figured out that Betsy didn’t want to fight. She wanted Kaleb to run away.
After some more biting and kicking by the two wendigos, Kaleb took this chance to recover and pick up his small pistol that he dropped. The two of them were now in a brawl, wrestling to get free. Betsy could never get along with her siblings, especially the twins. She could tell who she was fighting just by the smell and the small roars that escaped the Wendigo’s mouth while they were fighting. She was fighting one of the twins. It was of course the smart one Asa.
Asa and her twin sisters Ada were the worst bullies Betsy ever faced. They would always torment and intimidate her right in front of her parents. Both twins were brutal they would always have each other's back even in the toughest situations.
Finally from all the wrestling
Asa breaks free from Betsy's grasp and ends up scratching Betsy's eye and bolts towards Kaleb's neck this time, going in for the kill.
Betsy fights through the pain and tries to tackle Ada down. As she runs up to her with full speed she fails to take her down to the floor but instead has a stronghold of her. Betsy couldn't throw her down because of her small size. She takes hold of Asa's shoulder and bites her neck with a secure grip. Asa starts to spiral around to throw her off and is successful. Betsy’s hold on Asa slips and goes flying across the place. Betsy fell off when the other wendigo Ada, who’s been shot in the head, grabbed a hold of Betsy's antlers and threw her across the kitchen floor.
That was when Kaleb remembered the tales of the Wendigos.
"You can only kill a Wendigo by ripping the heart out and burning it in flames," Kaleb mumbles, realizing the mistake he’s made.
In these circumstances, it seemed utterly impossible to beat. Betsy was much smaller than both the wendigos they were facing.
Kaleb was just a human with a pistol that couldn't even kill his opponents. The odds were against them.
Just when Betsy was getting ready for round two. Kaleb shoots Ada in the head for the second time, knocking her out cold once again. She was celebrating too early and Kaleb caught her off guard. Kaleb now had three to five minutes to rip out the wendigo's heart and burn it. At this point, Kaleb believed that the small one was on his side, but what he didn't know was that the Wendigos were humans.
While Ada was knocked out cold, Kaleb bolted for the kitchen counter looking for the sharpest knife he could find. Asa leaps at Kaleb at full speed with a chilling death roar that could make anyone frightened to death. Its uproarious outcry rang through Kaleb’s ear as it chased him with its malicious eyes and intent. The disturbing outcry gave Asa's location away to Betsy who was ready to fight again.
Betsy had to rely on her sense of smell and hearing to fight since she was blind. She mainly used echolocation like a bat and a beluga whale. She made clicking noises whenever she got the chance.
Betsy goes in for another tackle to throw her on the floor aiming for her legs this time.
This time she succeeds.
Betsy manages to tackle Asa down from her feet but doesn't grip on properly. Asa grabs both of Betsy's horns and slams her down to the wooden floor making a hole on the floor. Debris on the wooden floor goes flying around the whole room. Asa lands multiple brutal blows onto Betsy's skull non-stop. Kaleb took this chance to look through the kitchen drawer for a sharp knife to cut through Wendigo's hard and cold chest.
In a hysterical rush, he grabs the first thing he sees. His hands were shaking looking through the multiple sharp objects in the drawer. His eyes couldn’t keep up and wondered off seeing Asa plummeting Betsy’s head into the floor. His heart wouldn’t stop beating out of his chest as continued looking in a frantic rush. Kaleb charges at the knocked-out Wendigo, stumbling and shaking through his path. He holds the knife with both hands and plunges it into the beast's chest.
Nothing happens.
He stabs Ada's chest once more; he doesn't make the slightest dent. Puzzled, he looks at the knife in his hands. It was a small butter knife. Frustrated, he throws it far and lands next to a sharp wooden debris from when Betsy was slammed onto the floor. It would be a perfect substitute for a knife. Kaleb picks himself off the floor and dashes at the wooden debris. Betsy tirelessly fights Asa with all her might and power in a futile attempt. Knowing she couldn't beat Asa, she was just buying time for Kaleb to finish Ada off.
Asa had a glimpse of Kaleb running towards a jagged-looking item. Finally, she had figured out their plan to rip out Ada's heart and Betsy was just a distraction. Anger fills her bright crimson eyes. She throws Betsy right in front of Kaleb, stopping him in his tracks. He stumbles down onto the wooden floor scraping both of his small and skinny elbows and knees. Betsy was trying to get up from the floor just then Asa kicked Kaleb across the room back where Ada was knocked out.
Kaleb stumbles his way towards the kitchen again and finds a cleaver knife on the floor next to the counter, only the adrenaline is helping him now. He scurries towards it on his knees and hands hoping not to be seen by Asa. He gets a hold of the knife. Just when he was about to
