My Time In Harvest Frights

Veggie Panic

Veggie Panic

Nov 18, 2023

Hyacinth spent a 'few days' in the field, gathering a total of one thousand gold coins before she stopped to rest a moment in the cabin. She was admiring herself in the mirror that was sitting on the long dresser by her bed. Her long brown hair was tied up by a thin, red ribbon, and on one side of her head were three flowers. One was wilted and gray while the other two were lively, red, and pink. Hyacinth wasn't sure what type of flower they were since they were simplistic and cute in design. While Hyacinth was focused on herself in the mirror, she didn't immediately notice the long, hairy, gray fingers creeping around the edge of the wardrobe's door. It was only when it creaked that it caught Hyacinth's eye.

Hyacinth gasped when she saw the fingers in the mirror just before they disappeared into the wardrobe again. Hyacinth picked up the candlestick, but it couldn't break through the darkness coming from the wardrobe. Hyacinth had no plan to go any closer to it either. Hyacinth sat the candlestick down and bolted out the door to put distance between her and the wardrobe. The candlestick was starting to melt away completely, but with no other way to light it, Hyacinth had no choice, but to let it burn.

Hyacinth found the familiar scarecrow sitting on the fence of her crop plot. His pumpkin head was rested against his scythe as he snored away. A cartoony snot bubble inflated and deflated from his triangle nose with each snore. Something about him sleeping peacefully irked Hyacinth. Hyacinth felt exhausted but had no urge to sleep even though there was a bed. "Hey, how come you can sleep?" Hyacinth demanded, pushing the scarecrow, but Harvey managed to right himself thanks to the wind blowing in his direction.

"Huh? What? Oh... I mean you can sleep, but it's not going to do anything. It's honestly just a fun idle animation." Harvey said with a shrug. Hyacinth rolled her eyes, but then she remembered the wardrobe.

"Do you know anything about the wardrobe in that cabin?" Asked Hyacinth. Harvey stared at the cabin, confused by her statement. He scratched his forehead, pushing up his hat a little.

"No, actually I don't. I'm forbidden from going in that cabin."

"Why?"

"I just am. There's likely a protection spell for humans inside." Explained Harvey.

"Okay, if you aren't allowed in there then why is there some kind of hairy monster in there?" Demanded Hyacinth. Harvey cast her an offended expression and folded his arms.

"Wow, tell me how you really see me, Hyacinth." Said Harvey. Hyacinth groaned.

"I mean you and I are definately not the same." Hyacinth struggled to explain herself, but she realized too late that she was digging herself too deep.

"But I'm the same as a hairy monster in your wardrobe?" Harvey asked through narrowed eyes.

"No, I meant--"

"That's it. You lost your new buyer's discount." Harvey huffed and leaped off the fence, taking his scythe with him.

"Wait, Iet's not get so hasty. You're right, you're... You're.." Hyacinth stalled, unable to think of a compliment as she stepped in front of the scarecrow to keep him from leaving. Harvey seemed to be the only friendly person in this world so she couldn't afford to upset him. Hyacinths scanned him from head to toe in search of something to compliment, but his pumpkin head had points of rot on it, his clothes were covered in tears and rips, and he smelled of old rainwater and earth. "You have a nice hat." Harvey narrowed his eyes as Hyacinth nervously fiddled with her hands. Suddenly the scarecrow smiled widely.

"It is a nice hat." Harvey took off his hat to wave it around before returning it to his head. As Hyacinth watched him walk away, she noticed something strange about the crop plot he passed. So far it was the only plot that the seeds would grow from. When she tried the others they would not sprout. According to Harvey there was a curse on these plots so if she wanted to use them she would need to purchase something called grow juice, but one bottle would take a thousand coins which was all she had. Hyacinth had thought for awhile what to buy, but when she noticed the crops in her feild wiggling, she had to put those thoughts aside for now.

"Hey, Harvey... What's going on with these crops?" Asked Hyacinth. Harvey turned back and looked at the crops. His half moon eyes widened when he noticed the issue.

"Hmm... I wasn't expecting this to happen so soon." Said Harvey.

"What is happening?" Asked Hyacinth, but before Harvey could answer, the crops shot out of the dirt like bullets and rained down on the farm with dirt falling after them. Hyacinth covered her face to prevent getting dirt in her eyes. Harvey waved his scythe in the air, causing a gust of wind to send the dirt flying away from him. When the air settled, Hyacinth opened her eyes and gasped. All around the farm, carrots and patatoes ran around on legs and each of them had a pair of arms.

"It's a random event which happens to be run away crops. I would catch them if I were you or you'll lose coins and seeds." Explained Harvey. Hyacinth's eyes widened to the size of gulfballs as she realized all her hard work would go to waste. She didn't understand why it would matter so much to her. This job was forced on her and yet the fear of losing the crops was strong. Hyacinth chased after the nearest crop, holding the rucksack in one hand. If she could grab them she could secure them in her bag. She managed to grab a few, but most of the patatoes and carrots were far too fast. There were moments she caught more, but they quickly hit her with some kind of pollen cloud that left her stunned for a moment. She was even slapped by some of the vegtables, allowing them to get away. It wasn't long before the rest hopped the fence around the farm and disappeared in the tall thickets which hid the rest of the world. Their laughing echoed across the farm, angering Hyacinth.

"Why were they so fast?" Hyacinth bent over with her hands resting on her knees as she tried to catch her breath. Harvey walked up to her, twirling his scythe in one hand as he smiled.

"That's to be expected when you're wearing level one shoes. You can run faster with better ones from my shop." Harvey pointed his scythe toward Hyacinth's shoes. She realized her sneakers were covered in small holes and had very thin soles. She could practically feel the earth beneath her feet. All the running she did left them sore.

"Why didn't you tell me this before?" Demanded Hyacinth.

"Well, It's called a random event for a reason. I could have let you parooze my shop for upgraded boots, but it would have costed you time you didn't have." Said Harvey. Hyacinth sighed. He was right. If she didn't gather the few she had, she would have to buy more seeds or face the wraith of the earth thing again.

"Whatever, I'm just glad that's done with." Hyacinth said as she pulled out her hoe to hoe the plot and sowed the seeds. As she watered the crops, Harvey pulled up the menu again.

"Now that you've mentioned it, are you interested in buying anything?" Asked Harvey. He sniffed the air. "I can smell lots of gold in your pockets. Why don't you lighten your load some?" Asked Harvey. When Hyacinth was done watering the crops, she grabbed both sides of her dress where she kept her coins. Her pockets were getting heavy and for some reason the endless rucksack didn't accept her coins.

"Woah... You have a good nose." Said Hyacinth.

"Well... To be honest, I can see how much money you have thanks to having access to the system." Harvey replied with a mischievous grin.

"Hey!" Yelled Hyacinth. Hyacinth folded her arms and glared at him, but he remained chipper and smily as ever. There was no use arguing with him.

Hyacinth took over the menu and looked over the shop once again. She had to plant the rest of her crops so there was no new coin. However, she decided to purchase a shoe upgrade to avoid this from happening again which costed her five hundred coins. They would have taken all of her coins had he not given her the new buyer's discount. Hyacinth wasn't as happy about the purchase as much as Harvey was, naturally. She put a hand to her hair, touching the flowers as she scanned the health item menu. She gasped, feeling a difference in her flowers from last she checked. At some point she had taken a little damage, knocking off a few petals. It had to be when she was hit by the vegtables. Hyacinth had to be more careful next time. For now, she purchased a special red spray bottle with a white strip on it. On the strip was a red cross for healing.

"How do I use this by the way?" Asked Hyacinth. She held up the spray bottle.

"Just spray the flowers on your hair and they'll regrow." Said Harvey. Hyacinth had the same thought, but wasn't sure if it was that simple. She did as he suggested and sprayed the flowers with the bottle. It took a few sprays and since the bottle was already small, there was likely only enough left to heal one more flower if she was ever damaged again. Once the bottle was returned to her bag, Hyacinth changed into her knew boots. They were made of brown leather, but at least they had some padding and weirdly enough she was able to move much quicker and jump a lot higher. There was something magical about the boots. The speed and jump was almost inhuman.

Hyacinth found herself running and jumping around the farm for fun, reaching places quicker than she would have without them. Hyacinth laughed as the wind blew through her hair, making her feel even lighter like a feather. She came to a stop when she heard laughter.

During Hyacinth's zoomies, Harvey had perched himself on the fence around the cropfield to watch her try out her new ability. "You look like you're having a lot of fun." Said Harvey as he looked toward the meter that appeared beside him. While he inspected the color, Hyacinth continued to do farmwork. The boots helped her rake in twice as much crops due to her speed increase. The meter was high on the green side now which caused Harvey to breath a sigh of relief. It was close to black just moments ago, but the gardening did as he had hoped it would. However, it had entered the yellow again during her struggle with the runaway crops. Thankfully the boots seemed to have brought her back down. For now Hyacinth was safe.

Before Hyacinth died, she was obsessed with a cute, but creepy chibi-styled farming game known as Harvest Frights. Unknown to her, this game would soon be her permanent residence. Trapped in her favorite game, day and night pass in mere minutes, crops grow in seconds, and there's a creepy cute, crow-hating, and pumpkin-loving scarecrow that serves as the tutorial guide. Harvey is more than willing to help her learn how to run the cursed farm she inherited and how to protect herself from the eldritch beings that stalk the farm... but does Harvey know more than he leads on? Could he know why Hyacinth is trapped in a video game?
