Dan really loves doughnuts. We found Krispy Kreme in S.Korea but Dan did not buy any to save our travel budget.
Until his birthday, flOra brought him to a Krispy Kreme shop as a surprise. There was a buy one get one promotion on that day which sold doughnuts for 12 + 12 with a good deal. Dan got 25 doughnuts that day! flOra made him a doughnut cake with all the doughnuts that we bought. He finished eating all doughnuts in 3 days!
Tips: How to celebrate birthday and important days while traveling
Being away from family and friends, it is hard to organize a party or have easy access to particular gifts you would like to buy for your loved ones. However, it could turn out to be the most memorable birthday celebration if we can be creative and welcome new experience. Here are some suggestions:
1. Celebrate birthday with new friends you meet on your journey: we had so much fun meeting new friends through couchsurfing and many travelers are actually excited to meet new friends from other cultures. If there is any cause of a fun gathering, people will show up. We are amazed by what our host did to celebrate Dan’s birthday - we played fireworks on their rooftop and they let us try on their traditional Korean Hanbok. Our German friends celebrated Dan’s birthday making cupcakes and had BBQ buffet. All you need to do is to be willing to tell others it is your birthday! You may receive some surprise and realize how much people care for you even you just met!
2. Pick a place to visit: Dan loves landscape and parks. flOra bought him to a park that is full of landscape design features by a natural stream. He loves it. It is simple but memorable to celebrate in places of we will enjoy – beach, parks, skyscrapers..whatever the birthday person likes, make use of the place to create memory.
3. Creative gifts – Just like building a Doughnut cake! If you don’t know where to buy a specific gift, use what is available in that country and build it your own way.
When Daniel was young, he had a dream: to have an extended honeymoon with the woman he loves.
He did not know how she looks or where is she from, but he wanted to spend the first year of his marriage with his wife.
Inspired by the Bible verse, Deuteronomy 24:5 : When a man get married. The first year he shall not call to war or business, but stay at home and please his wife.
He thought what if people actually do it?
Life is short and full of hustles. Soon we will have kids, pursuing career, earning money and the list goes on and on. If we are to be married for 50 years of our lives, 1 year out of 50 is only 2%. Why don't we devote one year to just focus on marriage, enjoy and learn about each other, build a strong foundation for marriage, and create the memories that we would never forget?
We would never have the first year of marriage back. If we rush back to work the next day after our wedding and be occupied with other priorities in life, will we get to know each other’s needs or spend quality time together? So me (flOra) and my husband Daniel decided to give our best time and attention to each other in our first year of marriage.
