It seems there was a third person here all along! Maybe you spotted her in the pages before, maybe you didn't. But she was there, even talking at times! (She even has a line hidden on this page before Ariel makes her visible to Roland...)
The counterpart to the genie Ariel we've been seeing, her appearance is from her last day - plus some wings (that gets explained next page). Of course, as a spirit, the real her shines through, and she no longer has the male body she was born with.
But she doesn't want to come back to life? Seems some explaining needs to be done...
