Chapter Eighteen: “Re-Connect”
(Kaye Ujikaze’s POV)
I frowned and looked away from that smartass in glasses, then rolled my eyes in frustration. No wonder why she used to hang out with a murderer… She’s a freaking moron.
“Hmph! You’d better watch how you talk to me… Just because you can do some peculiar magic doesn’t mean I am afraid of you” I grunted, as Mai fixed her glasses indiscreetly and smiled mischievously.
“It’s just that you’re not afraid of anything paranormal, honey. They are able to harm you, but you’re just too dumb to understand the seriousness of the situation” she taunted, that was when I couldn’t put up with her stupidities anymore. I pushed her away, to walk past her, but she seemed freaked out by something.
“Hey!” she shouted at me.
“What?” I turned towards her and smiled at her. “You’re going to call your FBI agent, Rin to harm me, because I dared to raise my filthy hands and touch your majesty?”
“Self-awareness is a good trait” the white-haired guy beside us growled through his teeth, Hayate left an unintentional wheeze and pushed him softly with his elbow, while his hands were still in his pockets.
“Your birthday is this month, right?” she said, ignoring my previous speech.
“That’s true. Why’d you ask?”
“I knew something was wrong with you” her glasses shined, as she moved her head and the red beam of light the speaker lights would give off, stumbled across her lenses. “I never expected an uneducated brat like you would be my deceased sister in her past life. She was nothing like you”
I shook my head around slowly, trying to process the information she had just given. “You mean” I spoke and raised my palms against her. “I used to be your sister” I laughed and took a few steps back. “Let me guess, your sister couldn’t tolerate you any longer and killed herself, right?”
“At least she loved me more than your parents do to you” she talked back, smiled and walked past me, towards Mangetsu, as if nothing happened. That really pissed me off, but I held back, because Hayate was a huge smartass and would begin ranting.
“Yeah sure!!!” I shouted at her, not holding myself back anymore. “Go talk to the dude who’s interested in listening about mentally sick people he never met and will never meet in the future!!”
“Hey!” the white-haired guy interrupted, shouting in a concerning tone. “Show some respect to captain Azura, even a girl whose parents died when she was 12, a girl with 6 mental disorders is more respectful and well-off than you!”
Hayate stepped forward and placed his hand upon him. “Hey, Shiro, no need to begin arguing over it. Let’s just say it’s something normal to not be taken seriously, especially when she’s got nothing to do with it and she’s 21. Say what you will, but I suggest giving Kaye a little space to conform to this new reality”
“Hmph!” I grunted, but Shiro and the glasses girl calmed down and lowered their profiles, so I decided to follow suit. “Fine” I sighed, Hayate nodded and then we went on with the main topic. Shiro and the glasses girl – who was proven to be called Mai – explained that paranormal energy was lurking nearby and that we should stay more alert and not approach watery or abandoned areas, especially when we’re on our own. It seemed like a lecture a parent would do to their child, so I zoned out. Suddenly, a wave of spirit force engulfed the area, but no one else would move, talk or even blink, except for me. Time had stopped. I looked around and saw a figure, standing just behind everyone else, his eyes were shining grey and his smile would give me nightmares. He walked, his long, black hair was falling down to his clothing was somewhat casual, just a black jacket, matching his hair, with a light grey shirt to match his eyes. The only diverse thing was his dark blue pair of torn jeans.
“Kaye” he whispered, still approaching me. I was shivering, I couldn’t move, my eyes were wide open and I was trying to speak, but I couldn’t. “You should pay more attention to what those lunatics say… you know… they just want you to be well. They’re not like your parents” his voice was raspy and deep, enough to give me even more nightmares. My parents care about me more than any other parent would!!! Shut up!!! “I’m Ludovic. And I’m one of those paranormal dangers they were talking about. You should’ve stayed more vigilant… Now, by letting your guard down, you let me in. I am sealed in you just like Rin is to Airi. You can’t win. Consider yourself either dead, or one of us!” he concluded, scaring me away and then, time flowed again, as if nothing happened. Although my heart was beating as fast as a train, my expression was normal. It was true… That… that Ludovic got into me… He’s controlling my emotions. Or at least, seemingly. That was when I paid more attention to what Shiro and Mai said. They explained how zoning out can be easier for the paranormal activity to reach us and get into us. It’s too late. My throat was aching, as I was holding back my tears. No. Ludovic just wouldn’t allow me to cry.
Ludovic was still standing just where he was last seen by Kaye, she just couldn’t see him. Footsteps were overheard – only to him – as Mika and one more invisible, yet distinguishable figure walked towards Ludovic, stood beside him and observed the conversation. “Hayate will let me in, someday, as well” Mika’s words broke the silence among the three.
